My Journey

December 19, 2007

I already posted this as a discussion but I just realized there was a place for this so I am moving it.

I have been getting a lot of questions about my situation so I though I would share as much information as I can. Please feel free to ask me anything. What have learned from all this is that sharing is the best thing you can do not only to help you get through it but to make sure others will not have to suffer.

So here goes in Oct 2005 DH and I decided to TTC. I was not on any BC for about 2 years and my periods were irregular, but didn't think much of it. Well the 1st month we conceived. Since I did not know when I ovulated I waited until I was about a month late to test. In December I went for bloodwork (HCG only) and it was positive. Was seen by an OB/GYN who did an exam and stated that I just felt a little small for being this late and would do an ultrasound to measure. Went for the ultrasound on a Sat and the technician told us nothing but to page the doctor. So my DH did and that is when they told us there was no heartbeat. So I was scheduled for a D&E on 12/22/05. Chromosome tests came back normal, she said she wasn't sure but it "may" have been a partial mole and was positive I would have a baby next time.

Well next time was 07/06. I knew I was PG 2 days b4 AF so I tested and it was positive. Went to OB, bloodwork to confirm. # days later I started bleeding. Went to the ER and they said it was 1 of the following: normal bleeding, too early to see anything, eptopic, or I was having a miscarriage. I followed up with the OB and confirmed I miscarried on 7/19/06. Again she said everything would be fine. A few days later my sister tells me she was diagnosed with PCOS and to ask if this was a possiblity. So I called and talked directly to the OB. I "did" have irregular periods, prior to the 1st pregnancy, and excessive hair. She said "there is no way I have PCOS bc I ovulate on my own and PCOS can not lead to a miscarriage." So not knowing any better I thought ok. Again she said next time.

So 3rd times a charm right? well My sister gave birth to my 1st nephew the day I found out I was pregnant again. It was exactly like the last time. I knew a couple days before tested on 11/13/06 and by 11/16/07 I was bleeding again. So OB scheduled me for maternal bloodwork and HSG. She claimed bloodwork came back normal and when we did the HSG she said my one tube was blocked. All she could do now was refer me to an RE.

So in April of 07 I found out I was pregnant for the 4th time. I was scheduled for the RE in about a week. I called my OB right away and she said she would do the blood test to confirm but to go see the RE anyway. By the time her test results came back I had seen the RE and had the results that day. HCG was through the roof and progesterone was 9.4. This was the FIRST time the OB had ever bothered to check my progesterone levels. My RE was able to tell me that I also had PCOS in that same visit. He showed me the cyst in my ovaries during the ultrasound. He was pretty sure that the baby was going to be fine but there was a chance that we were too late. I went back for a progress scan and there I was told. "The baby has not gotten any bigger and there is still no heartbeat, we need to schedule your for a D&E" I thought I was going to die right there. Baby number 4 was removed from me on 5/17/07 at 6.5 weeks.

So he was deteremined to find out what was wrong. 1st our baby's chromsone study was again completely normal. So he moved onto DH to see if there was something wrong. DH SA came back with low morphology around 3.5% strict. He was not concerned by this bc wwe were able to get pregnant and the baby came back fine. But we paid out of our pocket for the SCSA test to check his fragmentation and DNA. Came back great. She his swimmers are just shaped differently but nothing wrong with them. So onto me HSG was done again. Both tubes open no blockage, and no visable scarring. Endometrial biopsy = normal. Over 600 different bloodtests, chromosonal studies, etc. on me alone. Theses were the some of the same tests done already. Hubby came back fine. I had two things wrong. 1. PCOS, 2. 1 gene MTHFR w/a history of family blood clots. So onto fixing this.

I take a prenatal vitamin, 4mg of folic acid, 81mg baby aspirin and now 200mg twice a day of progesterone. I am now pregnant again. I am scared to death of the outcome of this pregnancy but this group has been great already, and I have to pray that things are in my favor for once.

So if I can say anything get your progesterone checked even for the 1st pregnancy, PCOS may be controlled through an insulin resistance diet and 10% weight loss (this helped me), low morphology means very little, and as hard as it is to keep going you will always find someone who has been there.

Best wishes to everyone and please hang in there. Trying to have a baby is not for sissies. BABYDUST and STICKY GLUE to all!!!

I am pregnant again and currently almost 7 weeks, we heard the heartbeat at 6 weeks and I am praying that it sticks this time. I am due around August 7.

Again if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I too have PCOS did youhave to take any meds to get pregnant?

December 19, 2007

No. I lost enough weight that my cycle regulated itself and I ovulate regularly on my own. My problem is what they call "habitual aborter" I can't seem to carry to term. I hope it works this time.

December 19, 2007

I am rooting for you Crystal. :):) How are you feeling today?

December 19, 2007

Hey teri, I was feeling fine. Then I tried to eat lunch and that was useless. I got sick and now I am fighting the nausea since about 2-3. I feel like all i do is complain so if that is how it sounds I am sorry. How are you feeling?

December 19, 2007

Hi Crystal, Your allowed to complain. You just enjoy your little Jelly Bean.

December 19, 2007

I am. Thank you, I get to see the bean again tomorrow. Beetle you hanging in there?

December 19, 2007

We'll take care of yourself and hope you are feeling better tomorrow, but I guess its just power for the course, right? :) Your not complaining your just sharing your thoughts and concerns with your caring friends on fertility ties. That is what we are here for and look forward to hearing an update tomorrow. I am feeling ok, but still have lots of breast tendernesss, waves of nausea and bloated and achy most of the time.. Keep us posted and lots of warm thoughts to you.

December 20, 2007

Hey teri I am going in for a scan today I hope that everything comes out fine.

December 20, 2007

Hey Crystal....what an amazing woman you are. You have been through so much yet seem to be very positive. It seems like this one is it. I know that once the heartbeat is heard miscarriage rates go down. I will be sending lots of sticky glue you way!!!! Good luck on the rest of you journey and keep us updated! Take care!

December 20, 2007

Thanks Fran. All the prayers and sticky glue is really working this time.

Baby is exactly where it should be. We got to hear the heart beat today it is 122BPM dr said that is perfect for 6w6d size is exact. He was able to see where the bleeding was coming from. I have some blood around the placenta and opening of cervix, he said this is very normal in pregnancy and baby is doing well.

December 20, 2007

December 20, 2007

The babies are already letting me know who's boss!!! LOL - they are giving me this wonderful heartburn and they don't like lots of foods right now or will like something one day and the next - nope! hee hee... loving every minute! :)

December 20, 2007

S Johnson I think that is a perfect you are a little taller than me and before this pregnancy I was at 155 and I am 5'5''. But at my heavest I was 250 once I got to about 180 I started to ovulate regularly. They say it helps but not always it might be your PCOS is worse than mine. I only have mild pcos. My older sister was 5'5'' and very thin like less than 120 and she always had problems it was just when she got older the weight piled on from the PCOS and she couldn't stop it. I think your weight is perfect you just might need the extra help from the meds. A good book I have is called "syndrome x" it teaches you a new way of eating and isn't hard to follow that is supposed to help with borderline insulin resistance, pcos and things like that.

December 20, 2007

Hey Shelly that's great, I got indigestion really bad. My mom says that heartburn and indigestion mean they will have a lot of hair. My baby doesn't like "chicken" hotdogs found that out yesterday, seems to like pasta though, typical italian LOL.

December 20, 2007

Crystal that is wonderful news!!!! Glad to hear the hb was good!!! And also that they found where you were bleeding from. My doc said as long as it was from the cervix it wasn't a super big deal. Better from there then the uterus. :) Take care! Sticky glue! Shelly, great to hear the twins are wonderful! Love to hear all about it!

December 20, 2007

Fran he told me the same thing. It was great to be able to pinpoint it and know what to expect.

December 21, 2007

Cindee and Teri thank you. It means a lot that something good can come out of something so bad. It has also helped me move on to talk about it and part of our mourning process was to name the babies.

#1 Rose Marie: after me and my sister who passed away right after birth

#2 Lilian Grace

#3 Angelina Ray

#4 David Gilbert: after my father and grandfather who both passed away this year in aug and sept. I like to think my daddy and poppop are taking care of my sister and babies. If I don't talk to you ladies until after the holidays, everyone please be safe and love each other. Happy holidays ***babydust and stickyglue***
