Extreme large ovaries and OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome)

When I went in for my 7th week ultrasound (no heartbeat detected) my ovaries seemed rather large...the lengths measuring 56 and 39 (was too shocked to pay attention to other numbers)

Is this severe/critical OHSS? could this scar my ovaries? I am unable to conceive mostly because of a severe male factor issue and have never had cysts..will OHSS scar my ovaries?

How long do u think i may have to wait before starting another cycle, fresh or frozen..

thank you

Is it normal to have bloating above belly button with cysts?

I hyperstimulated 10 days ago and I went in to get an u/s 2 days ago because I had severe cramping. I was told that I have big cysts on my ovaries. I have had extreme bloating for the last 10 days, but is it normal to have abdominal bloating and discomfort above the belly button, in addition to the lower abdomen bloating? When does the bloating usually end? I feel like I have a basketball in my stomache, but no more cramping. Any help would be appreciated!

ICSI hyper stimulation and a big SNAFU

My wife has gone to bed after a major crying jag that I held her through tonight and felt like crying myself.

We went through a $20.000 ICSI process with “IGO” in San Diego.

She hyper-stimulated and they retrieved 46 eggs. They immediately bombed me in the waiting room with doctors and nurses to try to get me to relinquish 16 eggs for stem cell research. They told me that they could not transfer this month and that the next month’s costs would add thousands of dollars, and if I donated they might lower the costs... in retrospect, I think they were bullshitting me to get some eggs, but I agreed in the waiting room, in total confusion, waiting to just go see and hold my wife. They then had me pay with my credit card for an additional $500.00 of medication to hold down bloating because of complications due to the hyper-stimulation.

They then called that day to say that 23 eggs had fertilized and looked good… we were walking on air!

Today they called to say that NO eggs looked good and that only 5 were maybes……..

They said that the 5 were questionable and might not work.

We are signed up to do a PGD on the 23 "successful" eggs that they told us about.

Now we are in a position where tomorrow we will be told if the 5 have any chance, and do we want to do the PGD on those.

My wife is crying, I don't know what the hell anyone is talking about, and don't know what to do.

The bedside manner and support of IGO sucks. We are totally devastated...

My question is this: We think we should cancel the PGD and save the $5,000 for another procedure with another company.

If the 5 look like they have even a slight chance, should we just stick all five “B” grade embryos in and selectively reduce, if needed to get one.

Then, if we get a baby, use the savings from not doing PGD to try to save up for another try with a DIFFERENT company and go for the other sex we want.

The problem is, I don’t know what the hell to do, why she produced 45 eggs, which the doctor said was the most he ever removed, and if the same dam thing would happen again?

Excuse my passion, but the entire decision has to be made tomorrow morning.

They bombed me with the decision about donating eggs to stem cell research while slamming me with other decisions, and I don’t want to feel at such a loss tomorrow…

Any help you can give ASAP would be appreciated.

If we get the money back from not doing the PGD then our bank account will have at least $5.000 to start saving toward another ICSI in a year or two…

My sperm levels are REAL low but the Dr said that the egg quality was the factor.

Could you please give me a complete answer and not the short, quick, brief answer you usually give? We are down to the wire here and very depressed..

Thank you.

New to IVF with questions, please

Hello doctors! I need some help, don't mind which doctor answers.

After another (3rd) failed IUI, it has become painfully clear that my husband and I will have to do IVF/ICSI, likely in early November. However, I have some concerns about all of the meds necessary, and I'm probably more nervous than most women. Specifically, I'm afraid of getting OHSS, or some other medical complication (twisted ovaries, blood clots, etc.). I've shared my concerns with my RE, who told me that he'd put me on a lower dose -- 150 (not sure what the measurement is -- I think iu).

Will this lower does lower my chances of OHSS and/or complications? Will I still have a good shot at a successful pregnancy without ending up in the hospital? I'm 35 years old, checked out OK across the board. My DAy 3 labs are: FSH/7.2, Estradiol/32.5.

Please advise.

Thanks much!

Transfer is tomorrow - OHSS?

I have been pretty uncomfortable since my retrieval on Tuesday. The only time I am comfortable is when I am in my pj's on the couch with a heating pad. Will they still do the transfer if I have OHSS? They changed us from 5 day to 3 day - so we transfer tomorrow at 11:30

IVF, OHSS AND ENDING UP WITH 0 EGGIES!!

I know I shared this already but thought I would like to hear from others that were told they had good eggies and ended up with almost none before transfer,,, please share your experience and give me some good news! :)

THANK YOU!

Here's mine again:

Horrible horrible day.... Because the swelling was so bad and I could barely breathe, and my stomach was feeling so bad and I felt so much nausea and sicky, the day to transfer the eggies became a living nightmare. Wouldn't wish it upon on my worst enemies... it was heartbreaking. First my hubby and mom rushed me to the clinic about an hour away from home, and the doctor had to get these big needles and jab me with them to take the water out!! :( It took bless their hearts, like 2 hours maybe, maybe less but since the needles goes in to the uterus area (papsmear way only excruciating) they took out over a gallon of water from my stomach, then the doc had the worst news ever.... he first took out 17 eggies.. (I am under 35, followed instructions, prescription orders to the t) but at the end of the day, 17 eggies a couple days later turned into 14, then he said only 10 fertilized but they are in excellent condition, they split into 6-8 cells, they were perfect, and then on day of the transfer 5 days after they were taken out, the Dr told me that only 2 decent ones remain, one is iffy, and they aren't even in good condition!!!

:( I was too sick for the transfer, in fact after he took the water out, I was able to breathe again but the cramping from the needles and painful ovaries made me hurt so much I had a hard time walking to the elevator, so I had to go back to the dr's office and they checked for internal bleeding, etc.. and took out some more water (thank you DR!) saved my life, except i was in so much pain that the Dr said we would have to get me transfered to a hospital in an ambulance, just to make sure I was alright and not internally bleeding, etc, infected... but we opted to wait and see if the vicodin kicks in and when it did I was able to walk around without feeling like the walking dead... of course on the way home I threw up everything, the meds etc, but I was happy to have made it home alive. phew, and hubby and my mom took care of me. Thank God for family and friends, and of course your loving patient DR. I am very sad and confused and devestated about the eggies though, what was 10 good perfect healthy fertilized eggs, turned out to be 3 but one won't make it through the freezing probably so "IF" I am lucky I will have two to work with when I am feeling up to finally getting the eggs transfered back?!? THAT IS HORRIBLE! I DREAD going back and when they dethaw them watch none make it so all that pain, misery and all the medication and treatments were for nothing? I thought I would at least get to in one IVF cycle try two to three times but now we aren't even sure after all of this that there will be any eggies for the Dr to put back in once to see if I can somehow get preggers is sooooooo upsetting and BEYOND FRUSTRATING!!!!!

I was told that I might lose some eggies if we have to freeze them but with full blown OHSS, I couldn't transfer the only 2 eggies that have a fighting chance back in because I was feeling so sick I thought I was dying! So my husband was almost in tears also but we decided to have to freeze them and wait until I am not going to the dr's every 2 days to be drained! :(

I wonder if I even get to 'try' to transfer or is the doc going to tell me I have none!!! :(

SO DEVESTATING!!!!

He says its highly unlikely for the last 2 to die out but if they do I will be mortified.

IVF IS SUCH A PAINFUL EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE TO HEAR THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE OHSS!!!

Wishing everyone way better luck than me and I'm sorry I don't have any good news!

Luv,

J

IVF and E2 level

Hi Dr. Q

I went in for E2 and U/S today after 9 nights of stimulation. Things seem to be going well: around 17 follies (there may be more that are really small which they didn't measure) varying in sizes from 16mm down. Was taking 150 Menopur, 150 Follistim with 5 Lupron. Then Follistim was cut in 1/2 for two nights. Today my E2 went from 953 on Thursday to 2193 and Follistim was cut out completely. Is there a point where the E2 can get too high or as long as it is consistently going up it's ok? How are things sounding to you? I am starting to drink some Gatorade, any other suggestions? THANKS!!!

Dr Q--I developed OHSS from my trigger shot!

I spent all weekend in the hospital with horrendous abdominal pains and nausea. Turns out that I had OHSS and developed 2 large cysts (3-4cm) on each ovary--4 total. I had to have a laparoscopy to "pop" the cysts. I am still in some pain--both from the cysts and from the surgery.

My question is...where do I go from here? Will I be able to take injectables again or am I pretty much guaranteed to have the same thing happen next time??? I did ovulate, though--which is a first for me! IS IVF my only option from here? I don't go to my RE until next week.

OHSS and Egg retrieval

Hello all,

I'm terrified of getting OHSS once we start IVF. Also, I've been reading about egg retrievals, and it seems like that's minor surgery.

Can anyone tell me anything to calm my nerves? How did it work for you? Was it painful?

Biting my nails!

Thanks--

Christine

Update on OHSS and Follicals

Okay ladies went to the doc and I have 10 follicals and mild OHSS. I am still very sore and I have to decide if we want to keep this cycle going or cancel because of the number of follicals. We were going to do a trigger shot and 2 IUI. And yes they were all about the same size and maturity. Dh and I BD on Friday, Saturday and Sunday ... not knowing that we had so many follis.. so we are a little worried about getting 7 babies. No we are not going to do the trigger shot.

Are fertility meds safe?

Hello Doctors,

Tomorrow I'm doing a natural IUI cycle. We're going that route for two reasons:

1. We want to see how my husband's sperm responds to washing;

2. Fertility meds make me nervous.

Do I have any reason to be afraid of taking things like Clomid, etc.? I'm kind of squeamish about meds in general, but the thought of OHSS or a blood clot is freaking me out. Am I being irrational?

Thanks.
