How effective is Metformin with conceiving if you do not have PCOS?

My doctortold me two years ago that I have endometriosis. I went through an operation to remoce any cyts that I had or anything like that. My periods were regular for a year and a half, like three months ago my Dr put my on metformin because he said my Test hormone level was too high and I was trying to get pregnant and I needed to control the endometriosis. How effective is this process

Vance's Triplets due in June!!

Finally we got pregnant!! We did a bunch of clomid with IUI cycles and got 1 pregnancy that turned out to be a tubal.. So we moved to gonal-f the first cycle we had 6 mature follies and didn't get a pregnancy.. So the 2nd cycle when we had 13 mature follies 16-22mm the RE let me go ahead with the IUI.. We ended up have 2 IUI's 1 at 24hr and the other at 48hr.. The first we used 98mil washed sperm with 89% mobility and the second was 202mil washed with 98% mobility.. I got my bfp at 11dpo.. It was 124.. Second beta at 13dpo was 588 and then at 14dpo I started spotting and went to the ER my beta was 1,500 and they did a scan and saw 2 sacs.. I was super excited.. Turns out the spotting was from progestrone.. So I went at 20dpo my beta was 28,124 and the second scan showed 2 sacs and only 1 heart beat.. Sunday morning I started to spot again and called the dr.. He told me it was probably just the progestrone again but to come in the morning for another scan.. I was scared to death I was miscarrying 1 or both babies.. When we did the scan.. There was 3 babies all healthy with heartbeats and kicking their little legs!!! We are having TRIPLETS!!!

I'm still on progestrone till 12 weeks

metformin till 12 weeks

baby asprin till 12 weeks

heprin the whole pregnancy

I have PCOS and MTHFR 677 Mutation

We've been trying to concive #2 for 4 1/2 years and have a DS that is 6 1/2.. Who knew trying for 1 would give us 3!!

Anyone got pregnant on Metformin?

I'm on Metformin 1500g a day because I have PCOS and irregular periods. Metformin has regulated my periods and I now have them every 32-35 days.

I went for a progesterone test and the result came back at 32 - which I was very happy about because the doctor said that it showed ovulation.

I just wondered do I have the same chance as a normal healthy couple to get pregnant now as I am ovulating? Or are my chances less because I have PCOS?

Just wondered if anyone on here has got pregnant by using Metformin alone?

Awaiting BFP

Hi everyone, my name is Latoya(27). Married 4 yrs, DH is 37.

I have been trying to conceive for over 3 years, I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2007. I am taking 1000 mg of Metformin, however RE wants me to take 2000mg a day, but that dosage makes me extremely sick. I was unsuccesful with clomid, started femara 2.5mg in February no luck, March went to 5 mg cd 3-7 follistim 50u 3 days, and ovidrel, went for iui and DH did not produce enough sperm so had to cancel and try baby dance. BFN. April same meds however this time my follicles did not reach maturity. Took a short break and had lap on Oct 6th. RE found a small cysts on left ovary which she removed and also states that I have a very mild case of endo, which she doesnt feel will effect me. I have to take provera to start my cycles so I took my last pill on 10/20, and my cycle started 10/28. I went in for ovary check on cycle day 2, everything fine. Started femara 5mg cd 3-7. Follistim 75ui cd 7 and 9. Which brings me to today, cd 10. I went for follicle scan. I had several follicles but only 2 decent size, 1 at 16mm on one side and 13 mm on other. My lining is 5.6. My e2 level was 35.9. RE wants me to do another 75u tonight and tomorrow of the follistim, then ovidrel on Sunday night which will be cd 12, then do iui on Tues cd 14. I guess I am just worried about the lining and e2 levels. Not worried about follicle size because they say they grow 1-2 mm a day.

I know this is a lot to read, but I am curious if anyone has had any success with these meds, or do you know if lining will continue to thicken by ovulation? what about the e2 level, shouldnt the number be bigger?

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

Metformin Question

Doc Rx for me 2 Metformin a day....

I am admittedly TERRIBLE at remembering to take them both.

Is it ok to take them both at the same time?

I haven't experienced any tummy side effects from them, so I sure would like to be able to take them both at the same time!

Is Metformin necessary to get pregnant?

I was put on Metformin for insulin resistance, but I am not one for unnecessary meds. I continue to read post after post that Metformin is not going to help me get pregnant, so I am wondering do I even need it? Is it actually fixing a problem that needs to be fixed? Also, if it is not going to help get pregnant, why does my doctor insist I use it for two months to see if I begin ovulating again before using other meds? Why not just go ahead and give me the meds I need to help? Thanks for any helpful information!

What's the next step after no ovulation with Metformin?

I'm 27 have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years. My periods have been irregular (or non-existent) since I was about 21 and I have PCOS. I have been on Metformin for 4 months and have had a period each month. I was feeling really positive that the Metformin were working but now I just had a day 21 progesterone test and the result came back at 2.9 which the doctor told me I had not ovulated. I thought if you had a period it meant you had ovulated?? My cycle is usually 32-35 days so do you think day 21 was the wrong day to test?

I just wanted to know what the next step should be? The NHS are quite slow to see me, is it worth going private? Do you think they will put me on Clomid next? or is there something else I should try first? I'm getting quite desperate now and don't want to be taking pills for 6 months or so with no positive outcome!

Hope you can help, thanks!

Metformin Tips please?

About 5 years ago, I was misdiagnosed with PCOS and put on metformin. Since it was so long ago, I don't remember how I reacted.

Concerned about PCOS, I asked my general endo to run some tests. Since the first of the year, I've put on 17+ lbs, craved sweets (not like me at all), my cycles are lengthening, luteal phase shortening and my acne has worsened.

Well, last week, my glucose tested high and so did my insulin levels. Glucose was at 120 mg/dL (it was not a fasting test.... rather, mid-day, not sure when I'd last eatten) and insulin was at 72 uIU/mL.

ANYWAY, my doc called in a Rx for Metformin today to hopefully get some of this under control.

I was hoping that some of you who've been on met for a bit could give me some tips...

I think I remember something about time of day, with/without food, starting dose slowly, etc.

Help?

I have cramps and slight pain on lower left side when testing positive on Ovulation Testers.
I'm READY already

I'm 27 and DH and I are ready for a baby. We just started trying. I have PCOS and have been trying to get my symptoms under control for quite some time in order to be as healthy as possible for pregnancy. I'm happy to say that I'm FINALLY at a healthy weight and my PCOS seems to be fading in the background a bit. I take 1000mg of GlucophageXR (Metformin) as well as prenatal vitamins. I found out not too long ago that they're fairly sure I'm now ovulating. I scored an 8.8 on my day 21 progesterone test. Now, I'm trying to pinpoint how long my luteal phase is in hopes that it's longer than 10 days. I'm pretty sure last month was only 9 days.

I love that there's a site like this for women. What a wonderful support network.

Should I start Metformin?

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, and I am not ovulating. I was told that I do not have insulin resistance. My 12 hour fasting glucose level was 102. What determines insulin resistance? Would Metformin help me?

Fist IUI with a BFP!!

I got pregnant with my son 2 years ago using clomid and metformin. I thought the same combination would work for my second child so I went to my RE and started the process. We tried for 5 months without success. I was ovulating each month but AF showed up each month right on time. We were going to do one more round of clomid, metformin and IUI. I went in to see my RE and do an ultrasound and she found a cyst from the clomid. Since I had a cyst, she said she couldnt give my clomid and that I needed to wait this cycle out. She told me to come back in 5 days later so that she can check my follicles. When I went in she said the right ovary had nothing and she couldnt get a clear picture of the right. She said to still BD but I was guarenteed to ovulate. I got a call from her the very next day. She said she got the results from my blood work and my levels went from 90 to 425 so she needed to do the trigger shot that day. I went in on friday for the trigger shot and went back on monday for the IUI. Around a week later I started to feel a little sick to my stomach. I decided to test a little early (13 days after my IUI) and I got a BFP!! I couldnt believe it. I went out to the store that day and got the digital test to read the word Pregnant and sure enough...PREGNANT!! Lots and lots of sticky glue needed... :) :) :)

Metformin for PCOS, is this normal???

I was diagnosed with pcos and was prescribed metformin which I started taking on June 24th. I had not had a period since April, and it was very irregular before that since I started it. By July 5th I started spotting and my period lasted roughly 12 days. Then, on July 22nd I got another one, same thing. Is this normal???

We are Finally Pregnant!

Our journey started back in September of 2008. We had been married a month, and knew right away that we wanted a baby within the year. After getting hired at a job where I had health insurance, we decided to discontinue the use of our birth control pills and get pregnant!

It wasn't that easy.... For the first 3 months, I was convinced every week or so that I was finally pregnant. But truth be told, I never had a period after going off of birth control, and when negative pregnancy tests (including bloodwork) told me that I wasn't pregnant....I knew there was a problem.

I went to an OBGYN in December of 2008. He put me on Provera to jump-start my period, and told me to start taking Metformin. This was in hopes that my body would regulate itself and my periods would start being regular again.

No period came. I wasn't ovulating. We tried a cycle of 50mg of clomid with no success. We tried 100mg. No success. At 150mg my Dr. told me that if my follicles were large enough, that he would give me a trigger shot to make me ovulate. But when I went in on Day 12 for my follicle check, my largest one was 12mm long, and my doctor cancelled the trigger, saying there was no way I'd get one mature enough in time to ovulate.

So we were in a pickle. I wasn't feeling very confident with the OBGYN we'd been using...I felt like I had to coach him along and convince him to try new things every step of the way. We decided it was time to go to an RE. This was tough choice for us, since the closest RE was 2 hours away, and our insurance didn't cover appointments there.

We thought long and hard, and after canceling, rescheduling, canceling, and re-re-scheduling, we finally decided that it was too soon to go to an RE. So we cancelled again.

In the meantime, my husband had been taking FertilAid for men, and I'd been taking FertilAid for women.

That week, I was at lunch with an old roommate, discussing my TTC despair....and she mentioned that her OBGYN had helped her fix some problems she'd been having with the Depo shot. So she recommended him to me. I went, and he decided to try putting me on birth control again with a high dose of Metformin to see if my cycles would catch on and regulate on their own.

Before I started the Birth Control pills again, I decided it would be wise to take a cheap dollar store pregnancy test and just make sure I wasn't already pregnant. Knowing my chances were slim to none, you can imagine my shock when I noticed a VERY faint line right before the time limit was up on the HPT. I didn't believe it. In fact, I almost threw it away. But since I'd never had anything even vaguely resembling a line....even an evap line...on a pregnancy test, I decided I better hang onto it.

After showing my DH and then posting a picture online here at FertilityTies, people were telling me that they saw a line too. I remained unconvinced....but the next morning I took another HPT and saw a faint line once again. So I called the doctor, had him order me a beta, and I went and got my blood drawn.

Still unconvinced, I went 5 hours later to pick up my results. When I read the words "POSITIVE" and saw that my number was at 37 (over 5 is considered positive), I didn't believe my eyes. I went into the lab again and asked the receptionist if I was reading the results right! She laughed, and said, "Yep, that's the number."

Wow. Just wow. It was TRULY a miracle. After months of trying, waiting, wishing, and endless praying...and after cycles of side-effect ridden Clomid and gut-wrenching Metformin....I was pregnant. And I'm still not sure how!

FertilityTies, along my journey has kept me sane. There were times I thought I was going to go crazy or just fall into the depths of depression and despair. FertiliyTies is a community of friends and you always feel supported and understood here.

Good luck on your journey to becoming a parent! May God bless you to have a very SHORT stay in this world of infertility and move on quickly to the world of parenthood. :) It's much happier here.

How to get my periods to regulate?

I have insulin resistance and am currently taking 1500mg of metformin a day. I don't have regular cycles, and have actually not had a period on my own (without progesterone) since going off of birth control last September. I have tried a few rounds of clomid, but I still don't ovulate.

I was thinking that perhaps I jumped the gun on the TTC portion of this journey and that I should be back-tracking and just focusing on getting my hormones regulated so that my cycles can be a little more normal.

I don't want to go to an RE just yet (since they are really expensive and not covered by my insurance), so I was wondering if an OBGYN could help me get my periods regular again.

If so, what medication would they need to prescribe? Or what course of action should I suggest that they should take?

Thanks for your time!

Dani

Metformin and prometrium after miscarriage

My RE put me on Metformin and 4mg of Folic accid after i miscarried my first baby in May. Found out on June 10th that i am pregnant again. RE says the metformin helped me to ovulate and i could stop taking it and start on Prometruim suppositories continue with the folic acid and prenatals. Ive already had an ultra sound and saw and heard the baby's heartbeat. RE wants me back for a repeat ultra sound this week because last pregancy i heard the heartbeat and a week later and baby's heart wasn't beating anymore. i had no signs of the loss. Do you think the prometrium will help me not to miscarry this time? I also read that women take metformin through the 1st trimester, is this going to affect me that i stopped it at 7 weeks? im a nervous wreck!!!
