Injectibles

Hi Dr Q

I will be having an IUI in a couple of weeks and the doctor wants me to have injectables (Puregon) and then the trigger shot (Pregynl). I have no fertility issues but my husband has slightly low motility. Can you tell me what the injectibles are for and what is the benefit of doing them? Thankyou!

Questioning Course of Action

Hi - I've been reading a lot of stories on this site and am now curious about my RE's "plan". I am 36, ttc 2 yrs, all testing "normal", DH "great". Dr. wanted to start with IVF, but I said no, I wanted to try IUI first. So I just had my first IUI 7 days ago. I did Follistim 6 days (150 IU), an Ovidrel shot (250 MCG), and the IUI.

In your opinion does this sound like an aggressive starting point? Any ideas why he might have chosen this route for me?

Not feeling very optimistic today...

Hi all,

I set myself up this morning and took a hpt at 8dpiui and it was negative, of course. I know it's early, but I've been reading about women who have gotten positives this early.

In addition, the fact that I don't feel any symptoms at this point, also isn't helping. I have mildly sore boobs, but that's about it.

Finally, we only injected 2.3M sperm last Wednesday during my IUI (with 61% motility), so I'm not feeling very hopeful that it will work.

Maybe I'm wrong -- anyone have any success stories they can share?

Thanks so much. I so wish this works for us, but I fear it won't. :(

Odds with 1 follicle

Doc,

I had an IUI 5 days ago. I was on 100mg of Clomid cd 9-14. I only had one follicle mature. Does that increase or decrease my chances. Male factor pretty strong (125mill/60%mot).

I have been VERY gassy. Is this a possible symptom of early pregnancy? I was not aware whether Clomid has symptoms two weeks after you stop taking it.

IUI costs at RE vs OB/GYN

I just got a packet from the RE I'll be seeing in October. I'm FLOORED at the costs.

With my OB/GYN, here's what I paid:

4 follie studies at $247

1 IUI at $181 (there hasn't been a charge for the sperm wash, not sure if that was an oversite or not. But they do do it inhouse)

Total charge for IUI Cycle w/OBGYN: $1169.

In the RE packet, they want to do the following additional procedures:

Baseline Ultrasound & appointment: $254

Follie studies: 3 @ $260

Lab Estradiols 3 @$156

Insemination cost: 2 @ $261

Sperm Prep: 2 @ $275

TOTAL IUI Cycle Cost with RE: $2574

Ok, so what are these other things I'd be looking at? Estradiol tests? Baseline u/s? Why are these important?

The biggest reason I ask is that our insurance has a $5000/year cap on fertility procedures. We'd get less than 2 with the RE (assuming we'd need all that--4 ultrasounds, 3 estradiols, 2 IUI's). Whereas with the OB/GYN, we'd get 4 cycles, or more, for that price. Our insurance will not cover IVF at all, so we cannot afford to do this any other way.

My OB/GYN says that their IUI protocol was written by this same RE, I'm just curious as to why there is soooo much more done by this RE? and is it really worth it?

Incidentally, we have male-factor infertility (motility 40% and a slight WBC, but hubby has since done a month of antibiotics--haven't yet been re-tested). What do you think our likelihood of conception thru IUI is?

BBT Drop 5 DPO

Hello all. I am knew here. I am so happy I found this website. My husband and I have been trying to conceive since January. I am pre-diabetic and my ob/gyn thinks that is possibly why it has been so hard for us. I was not ovulating at first, but since have started to do so on my own. I had my first IUI done on Thursday, 08/21/2008, with no harsh side effects other than some cramping in the PM and bloating. I had the HCG shot on Tuesday, 08/19/2008. My bbt has been over 98 since Friday AM. This morning, it was under 98 at 97.86. According to my chart on fertilityfriend I ovulated on day 14, which was the day I had the IUI. Should I be concerned about the temp drop? Could it have been because I took the temp an hour sooner than usual, but I also went to bed an hour earlier? I would greatly appreciate anyone's take on this.

IUI

Is it bad to have washed the sperm sample twice? They said it still looked like a good sample. Does every fertility place have different protocols as far as having a good enough sample in order to do the IUI?

Clomid

I took Clomid on my last cycle and had an IUI but it didnt take. I was wondering if we didnt have the money this time to do the IUI should I still take the Clomid anyway? An also I was wondering about taking Mucinex and baby aspirin as I think I was kidof dry around ovulation. We plan on doing another IUI in October. We have tried naturally for 2 1/2 yrs to conceive but it hasnt worked. When they washed the sperm it took two times to get it clean. Is there any significance to that?

Advice on Next Steps

Hi,

We completed out second IUI with 50 mg clomid, and HCG trigger. I had one dominant follicle for each cycle. Last cycle I took prometrium a few days after ovulation. My 21 day prog was 26.7, but we did not get pregnant. We are going to try one more iui. Do you have any advice on what else we can try to make the chance for preg greater? I do not want to have more than twins (prefer one!!) so I was wondering what we can do that has pretty safe odds for not getting triplets or more. Also, all my tests so far have been normal- hsg, estrogen, thyroid, fsh, prolactin, sperm analysis is great. Not sure if there are any other tests I can have done. My mom suggested blood clotting testing since my gramma and great aunt are on blood thinners. What do you think about that and what tests are normally ordered for this? Any advice would be great. we have been ttc for a little over a year. 35 Years old.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

IUI

Is IUI something most ob-gyn doctors can do? Is it cheaper than IVF? Which one works better?

Pregnant after first IUI

Me and DH are both 24. I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. Summer of 2007 I stopped taking B/C and nothing happened for a year. Cycle stopped coming about November of 2007. Went to FCI (Fertility Centers of Illinois) after a co-worker got pregnant from them. Our first appointment was the end of May 2008. One cycle with just Provera to start, and then one cycle of Provera, Clomid, and an IUI.

7.28.2008 - First IUI

8.11.2008 - Positive Blood Test

8.21.2008 - First U/S (4 weeks since IUI)

8.28.2008 - Go in for 2nd U/S to hopefully see HB

I am glad to have found a place online to get insight on our situation, and am hoping to pass the time until we see our little Cupcakes heartbeat!

Progestrone Suppositories

Can my husband and I have intercourse in early pregnancy (4 weeks since IUI) while still using Endometrin progesterone suppositories?

Can motility improve THAT much?

Hello doctors,

I just had my second IUI. The reason we're doing IUIs is because of moderate male factor. Since February, my husband's sperm values have been low across the board: count, motility, morphology. We were told that IVF/ICSI would likely be "inevitable" but that we could try a few IUIs first.

The first IUI we did only gave us 300,000 motile sperm which was injected (post-wash). I think the pre-wash count was 9 million, 25% motility -- consistent with several semen analyses we've done in the last 5-6 months.

However, this time around, count was still low (20M pre-wash), but the motility improved to 60%! For my second IUI (this past Wednesday), 2.3 million motile sperm were injected. As you might guess, our RE was encouraged by the dramatic increase in motility, and said that the overall QUALITY of the sperm had greatly improved, though the count was low. So here are my questions:

1. For IUIs, what's more important: Quality or Quantity?

2. What could account for this huge motility improvement, as my husband doesn't bike, already wears boxers, doesn't sit in hot tubs, etc.?

3. If the quality of the sperm is good, but the count is still low, do we still have a decent shot at getting pregnant?

Many thanks!
