Question about Femara for infertility

Hi I'm on round two of trying to stimulate ovulation with Femara. I was told to take two weeks worth of birth control pills to initiate my mentrual cycle, I haven't had a period on my own in over a year. My question is...can I just take 7 birth control pills, which would finish my open pack from last time? I am eager to start the Femara and really don't want to wait another week, seeing as one more week of birth control would be a total of two weeks on it total.

Can you still get pregnant if you hardly ever get your period?

I have my period every 5-6 months, sometimes its less but most of the time it can sometimes be more than that. How can you get pregnant if you dont really get many periods? and i dont know how to tell if im ovulating? I want to conceive but i heard the only way to get regular peroids is to take the contraception pill and i dont want that. I dont know very much about PCOS, i only found out i got it today but the doctors dont seem to be helping me very much, i want some treatment so i can put my mind at rest but all they gave me was the pill and told me they would give me it when needed. Im scared that if i leave it too late my infertility will get worse! I dont have achne and im not over weight, its just my fertility im worried about and i would just really like to know if i have the chance at least.

How do I know when im ovulating when i have PCOS?

I found out today i have PCOS, Im 19 but have been in a steady-long term relationship ever since i was really young. Im really scared that im not going to have kids ever... I only get my period about once every 5-6 months, sometimes it varies though. The last one i had was about 4 months ago! My doctors dont seem to care very much, they are trying to make me go on the pill but i dont want a concraception, but she said it will increase my chance of womb cancer, but i want to be able to get pregnant! Im not over weight and i dont have spots, its mainly just the period side of things that are affecting my at the moment i think. I dont have a clue if i ovulate alot and i dont know how to tell. My doctor is reffering me to the Gyno but im worried they will just tell me the same as my doctors do and tell me to do something about it when it gets worse or whatever but i dont want to do that! If there is any tips at all about helping infertility i would like to know anything as i dont really know much about PCOS but i am very worried. Please help?

Is prolactin a sign of pregnancy or of a tumor??

My last period was January 27,2010, and I am pretty sure that I ovulated on the 10th. However, as of right now I am very confused. I took two pregnancy tests that came out positive and three that came out negative. I went in for a blood test that came back negative but my prolactin levels were very high, in addition I have been having some breast tenderness and mild nausea. My pcp wants to monitor my prolactin levels to see if I need to get an MRI done. After, hearing this I needed a second opinion so I went to a female dr this time and after talking about my symptoms she seemed very sure that I was pregnant and that the hcg was just very low at this point. Low hcg is something that my mother dealt with when she was having kids, but now I am very concerned, because if I am not pregnant then I have a brain tumor or something else causing my high prolactin. So my question is should I begin taking prenatals so if I am pregnant the baby is at least receiving folic acid, or should I wait and see if I get my period soon? Also, is it really common for hcg to show up this late?

Unexplicable Sadness

Our journey began with the two of us finding a second chance at undying love and happiness. We decided to pull the goalie and try for a child. I already have a son from a previous marriage (13yrs - gulp). We first learned we were pregnant July 2008. We were happy. I cried with delight. We chatted about all the exciting things that come with pregnancy; nervousness, anxiousness, happiness... the adventure ended with exploring the feelings of sadness. Those associated to a loss. September 2008, we miscarried - 10 weeks along. I was devastated. 2 weeks short of the "green light zone" and we learn the foetus was measuring just under 7 weeks. Just not fair. Meanwhile, everyone I know is getting pregnant and some of which were totally unplanned and some even unwanted... I wanted... badly. This broke my heart. It was the first time I wanted it - the first time, it was not planned - I love him dearly and wouldn't change a thing.. but definitely unplanned. I had a friend who I walked through the roller-coaster of infertility with. I was saddened by her journey, which ended in two healthy lovely children – but she would speak to me of her angst towards those who could get pregnant. I understand that now. I am happy, but at the same time feel cheated. I find myself making faces at the television when a mother speaks of her pregnancy on TLC. I am not like this – but it is changing me. 

December 2008, we were going away to Jamaica for a family vacay with some friends. My friend was pregnant at the time so it was easy to not take advantage of the all inclusive drinks. I was otherwise feeling normal. While away I experienced some severe pain – I sloughed it off to ovulation – usually happens to me anyway. When it was still present the next day, I decided to speak to the Dr. to ensure there wasn’t something wrong... we were trying – what if it was an ectopic, right? In hind-sight, he didn’t even do a pregnancy test. I had my period on the 9th of Dec for 7 days. This was happening on the 23rd or so. He gave me some antibiotics and told me I had PID. Hmmm.. Ok. When I got home on the 27th, I did a HPT – Got a positive. I was excited, happy , scared and thought “here we go again”. 3 hours later, I started spotting. I miscarried early into the New Year. They said I was probably pregnant before leaving on vacay.

Feb 2009. I get ref’d to a Gyno for monitoring and testing. Have a few tests done and she gives us the green light to keep trying. We also get a rec for a consult with a fertility clinic. Fertility clinic Dr. scares me and I decide to give Gyno a try – she was the one who helped us at the Emerg when I miscarried in Sept (total fluke). Early March 2009, I’m pregnant. We start taking progesterone. Early May 2009 – another miscarriage. My dates put me at 8 weeks along and foetus size doesn’t exceed 6 weeks. Again.

Gyno sends us for testing, genetic counselling and we decide to take a SOLID break from trying and enjoy the summer. Enjoy each other as husband and wife...

July 2009, we go through a battery of tests with Fertility Guru. He assures us he thinks our case is easy... Sept 2009 we meet for a follow up – he tells us there is no cut and dry answer, unfortunately since everything with me and with hubby seems fine. Only guess is that my cycle is too long and that something is happening in that time to make things go south. We take that theory and run with it. Letrozole 5mgs day 3 to day 7. Cycle monitoring starting on day 8. “3 cycles should do it” says Fertility Guru.

3 cycles later, no dice. Back to Fertility Guru for Plan B. He suggests perhaps upping the anti a little and trying Gonal F day 3 onward with a trigger shot then followed by a sperm wash/and 2 consecutive IUIs. We decided to give it a shot. “3 cycles should to it” says Fertility Guru again... to which I replied “3 cycles is all you’ve got, cause I’m taking the summer off!”.

So far, we are in plan B – 1st cycle. I’m trying to be hopeful and keep a positive demeanour.

The process is exciting, tiring, frustrating, and soooo many other emotions. Hubby and I get lost in it sometimes... and I try to remember what it is we are doing... and WHY.

I will keep you posted. Thanks for reading!

xxx

If you’re seriously thinking about egg donation to start a family or thinking of becoming an egg donor, you need to listen the latest show on Creating A Family. It’s about how to choose an egg donor. DNA’s Nancy Block was part of a great roundtable discussion about the process, ethics, costs, genetic testing, meeting donors and much more.
How Do I know if I'm infertile?

So I have this problem - I have always been very regular with my period.. until 4 years ago, when I had my first miscarriage (it was some chemical problem). I was a good 10-12 weeks in. I didn’t know I was pregnant - I had no symptoms, except that I had no period - just a few days of spotting at every cycle period. Since I was on holiday in a different country the whole time, I thought the travel & different activities had messed up my cycles. Until I had very heavy cramping & bleeding. I was rushed to the hospital where I found out I was miscarrying. The doctors had to do a DNC to clean me. Ever since then, my cycle (which was always 29 days to the day) became irregular - sometimes my cycle was 35 days, sometimes 49 days. It carried on that way for another 2 years. Then I started missing whole months at a time - and my longest has been almost 4 months. I know I should have seen a doctor but I was young and reckless, and didn’t think much of it. I have not been with a lot of men, except my now-fiancee and my ex of 5 years.

In July last year (when I missed almost 4 months of my period) I decided to see a doctor. My doctor sent me for ultrasounds, a pelvic exam, and a hysterosonogram which concluded that I have PCOS. Because of my doctor at the time seeming so unknowledgable of the condition, I decided to change my doctor. My new doctor is now saying that she does NOT think I have PCOS because even though I have a lot of cysts in my ovaries, everything else is OK. My hormones are OK, my sugar levels are OK, my PAP test was OK,.. she even checked my thyroid levels and they are OK. The only thing wrong was that I was very low in iron (I have started taking iron substitutes). I know I have gained some weight (I was 150lbs and now I am 175lbs) but for my height (5ft 4") I am told it's still ok.

So now I'm confused… Do I have PCOS?? And will I be able to conceive? I have not used any contraceptive with my fiancee for the passed year, and even though I'm not trying,.. I'm hoping,.. and I can tell he is too, because every time I am a few days late he gets excited. Is it because we are not trying at the right times? Or is because there is something wrong with me? I don’t know what to do. I'm very confused and I don’t know what next step to take. My current doctor has decided to send me to see a gyno as well as an endocrinologist. I don’t know how long it will take for me to get an appointment with them, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone out there can help me. I am 27 years old and will be getting married in August this year. My fiancee and I want to start a family soon after.

I am looking for other ladies who are in a similar situation as me or who have been. I had an ectopic 8 years or so ago and lost my left fallopian tube..i have been ttc to conceive with my new fiancee for almost 3 years now and suffered from so much pain that i started suspecting endo...i did alot of research and after failed fertility treatments (clomid and femera) i decided to make natural changes to see how my body would react..i made diet changes, did maya massage, castor oil packs, yoga and have seen some major changes however i am still not pregnant and its been a year from those changes and certain pains are still there and issues as well SO i am going for a lap, hysteroscopy and d&C in april...any stories that can shed some light on my situation would be great or anyone going through the same thing and want to support each other please come and chat...THANKS and good luck to all of you!

Radio Health Journal's insight on egg donation: What are your thoughts/concerns

Nancy Block of our Donor Network Alliance affiliate was recently interviewed on the nationally broadcast Radio Health Journal to discuss the process of egg donation and what intended parents and donors can expect when working with an agency. She also discusses the benefits of the using the Donor Network Alliance and how donors are screened. Check it out: http://www.mediatracks.com/RHJ_10-07.mp3

When you’re listening, don’t let the woman from The Center from Bioethics and Culture influence you. She states that “those stricken with grief from a barren womb are willing to put another woman’s health at risk because they want to have a child.” Not true. All donors are told what the risks can be from this type of procedure from our agencies. Pretty judgmental, in our view.

What are your thoughts?

Are anxiety attacks normal?

Dear All,

I wonder if someone cal help me.

I found it just prior to Christmas that I was basically infertile and that I would need ICSI treatment in order to have a child. I was then told that I would most likely me a low responder (if at all) and that we should be prepared for the stimulation medication not to work and for the ICSI to fail.

I had my other half's children and father over all Christmas and New Year so didn't have a chance to 'deal' with what I had been told.

During the last week I have been having 'moments' throughout the day (twice today) where I start to feel sick, then I go shivery, cold and clammy and sometimes my breathing speeds up.....which all then leads to a hugh crying session.

I don't want to see my GP in case she prescribes me something which my fertility clinic will have an issue with.

Are these feelings normal??? My other half has three children from a previous relationship (one of which is only 3) and I struggle when they are over....feel guilty.....but really struggle.

Extra Cervicial Mucus Discharge

We have been ttc for 6 months now. Last month we started using ovualtion tests and tried at the right time. I got my period a week early. 12 days later I had some spotting/light bleeding. We used ovulation tests again this month and haven't gotten a positive yet, and Im due for my period in about a week or 2. My cycles aren't regular and never have been! So on day 15 of my cycle I started getting an extra thick mucus discharge a few times a day. I took ovualtion tests and got negatives. Im on day 18 of my cycle now and Im still getting some discharge but not as much. I still haven't gotten a positive on an ovualtion test and Im thinking I totally missed it this month. Im wondering if this is normal and if its a possible sign of pregnancy? I can't remember getting something like this before when I was pregnant with my son, but then again, I don't remember every detail. Could I have ovualted earlier this month because I started my period earlier?

Thanks

What can cause a tube to be blocked out of the blue?

I had an HSG done in July and it showed that everything was fine. I went to my OB last Thursday and he did an intravaginal ultra sound and said that my right tube was blocked. What may be the cause of this? Could it have been slightly blocked before and they rad tech didn't catch it?

Agencies Launch Program to Help Parents With Surrogacy Births in Illinois

Two Chicago-area surrogacy firms today announced the launch of a program designed to facilitate the delivery in Illinois of babies carried by gestational surrogates.

Alternative Reproductive Resources (ARR), Chicago, and the Center for Egg Options (CEO), Northbrook, Ill., created The Surrogacy Advantage to help more intended parents benefit by the state’s surrogacy friendly status.

Gestational surrogacy is when a third party carries a child that will be parented by another individual or couple; the child is not conceived with the surrogate’s egg. In Illinois, if at least one intended parent has contributed the sperm or egg(s) and if they fulfill all of the necessary legal requirements prior to the child’s birth, they are recognized as the child’s legal parents through an administrative process, without an adoption, allowing them full custody of the child upon its birth.

“We’ve fully addressed the necessary legal and medical guidelines to give parents the best possible outcome once the baby’s arrived,” said Robin von Halle, president of ARR (www.arr1.com <http://www.arr1.com> ).

Added Nancy Block, president of CEO (www.egg411.com <http://www.egg411.com> ), “Both of our agencies have certain clients – those who live overseas, for example – who need help coordinating an Illinois birth. We want to make it work.”

Under the program, the two agencies will jointly recommend willing surrogates to clients, and will also administer arrangements for other agencies whose clients need assistance arranging Illinois births. The program includes:

Securing an obstetrician for the surrogate.

Facilitating hospital coverage.

An exclusive surrogacy health insurance that allows for payments to be stretched over five months.

Provision of lodgings for out-of-state surrogates and their families.

Referral to a legal specialist with expertise in third-party fertility matters.

Referral for independent psychological testing.

Independent, bonded/insured escrow services for the surrogate’s payments.

Referral to a nutrition counselor for the surrogate.

ARR and CEO have been matching parents with gestational surrogates for a combined 15 years. “It’s a tremendous amount of work, so it makes sense for us to combine our knowledge of surrogacy and Illinois’ unique environment to help people on this path,” said Block.

For further information on The Surrogacy Advantage, contact von Halle at info@arr1.com <mailto:info@arr1.com> , or Block at info@egg411.com <mailto:info@egg411.com> .

</mailto:info@egg411.com></mailto:info@arr1.com>
