My Journey - PCOS to baby!

I figured it was about time I updated my journey. Hopefully this will help someone else get to that BFP!

My dh & I started trying to conceive in September 2007. I stopped taking the pill somewhere near the end of August 2007. Like everyone else, we thought we would get pregnant very quickly. We even planned a big anniversary/baby making trip to Mexico. We were sooooo excited! No one in our families has had any problems with infertility. We are both young (I was 27 & my dh 29) and we are both within a normal bmi.

The first month we tried I thought I was pregnant b/c AF didn't come for about 5-6 wks. But I kept getting BFN's. The next cycle was about 7 weeks. then the next about 8 weeks. Each time I thought I was pregnant, but got BFN. I didn't understand bc before I went on BC I always had long (32 day) but regular cycles. I went to an OB/GYN & she said it could take 6 months for your body to regulate after getting off of BC and all I could do was wait. So I waited, and kept trying. I went back at 6 months and was told that there was nothing I could do, but try for a year and then go see an RE. If your doctor tells you that - FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR.

Luckily I made an appointment with another dr., thanks to the advise from the people on this site. He did some blood work and told me my Fsh levels were normal, I think it was 6 or 7. But my LH was through the roof at 21. THat meant one of 2 things. 1. I was ovulating. Or 2. I had PCOS. He told me to bd just in case, but to also try the ovulation predictor kits and charting my temps to see what I found. During this time - I still getting AF, but only every 7-9 weeks.

I started buying the regular OPK's at first and realized they were always both pink and I couldn't tell the difference. Also, I couldn't really tell the best time to take them b/c I didn't have regualr cycles. So, I upgraded. I bought the digital OPK's and I started using them ever day. I finally got a positive and was so excited! But when AF didn't show in 2 wks and I still got a BFN I resorted to starting over. THat's when I noticed I would get several positive - digitial - OPK's a cycle.

My charting wasn't much help either as it looked more like a topography map than anything else. I took my temp at exactly the same time every morning and even put it on fertilityfriends.com for digital tracking, but it just said "anovulatory". Or would say I ovulated when I had not. So, I bought a book on PCOS, read it, and headed back to the dr. After all, his sign said he dealt with "infertility".

If I could pass one word of advise onto anyone reading this it would be that not all dr's that say they work with infertility do. Writing scripts for Comid & fertility shots is not the same as being specialized in infertility and trying to find and target the problem. Dr's need no special training to add "infertility" to their sign outside. So be sure to ask exactly what makes your dr. specialized.

Anyways, back to the story. I went back to the dr with my charts and my stories of my OPK's. I obviously wasn't ovulating the last time I went when my LH was so high, so I was assuming it was the PCOS, but I wasn't completely convinced after reading the book about it. I'm not overweight, I used to have regular cycles, and my dr never did an ultrasound to confirm.

Instead, he just gave me Clomid. I should point out that I do have PCOS and it has been confirmed with an ultrasound (different doc). But fully explaining, and fully diagnosing are all parts of being a good doctor in my mind.

FIrst round of clomid I had a AF came after 28 days, but was VERY light. I don't know if I actually ovulated b/c that dr. doesn't check progesterone levels. But I started another round of Clomid just in case. That time I bought the $250 OV watch (waste of money). I didn't get AF the second time. I took a month off, then went back to the dr. He was ready to put me on fertility shots, but at 27. I was not ready for the risk of triplets, so I asked if I could try an increased dose of Clomid first. I had HORRIBLE side effects, but still no AF. I talked it over with my husband and we decided we would rather adopt than have triplets at our current ages, we just didn't think we could handle it. So we decided to hold off on the shots.

By this time it was September 2008, a year of trying, so I started looking into RE's. I originally thought you only went to an RE for invitro - but thought I would look into it more. I found acrm.com and read their "journey" which was almost an exact footprint of mine. I researched prices and realized it wasn't as expensive as I had originally thought so I made an appt.

My first appointment was at the beginning of September 2008. I had actually just gotten AF - randomly - a couple of days before my appt.

I went in, they talked to me for about half an hour explaining all the steps and the options & what all we needed to check. They immediately did an ultrasound to check my ovulation status and my PCOS (which confirmed it). I was given Femara to make me ovulate

(since clomid didn't work), and metformin to get my insulin levels under control b/c of my PCOS.

They sent me for a full blood work-up to make sure nothing else was wrong. ANd sent me to have an HSG to clear my tubes & make sure they weren't blocked. On 9/10 I came back for another ultrasound to check my ovulation status. I had 4 eggs "in the running", came back the next day for an HCG trigger shot to induce the ovulation. Then came back on 9/12 for an IUI. We figured after a year of bd - we would go ahead and try an IUI if they could get us to ovulate. On 9/19 (my birthday!) I went back for a blood test where they confirmed that I HAD ovulated! And my progesterone was high enough to carry a child. ON 9/24 I took a Home pregnancy test and got my very first BFP! I went back on 9/25 for a confirmation blood test which confirmed I WAS PREGNANT!

They had me come back for 2 more blood tests, then an ultrasound at 6 weeks where I saw my baby for the first time. And another ultrasound at 7wks 3days where I saw the heartbeat (139) for the first time. They released me to my regular OB who I went to at 9weeks for my 3rd ultrasound and saw the heartbeat at 164! Just one month after going to an RE I was pregnant!

I am now 11 weeks, almost through the first trimester, and I've never been happier in my life!

A little scared

I have my first OB visit today and I am a little scared about being able to hear the heartbeat. I had an ultra sound done at 7 wks and 2 days and the heart rate was 152 and the baby measured just fine. What are the chances we will hear the heartbeat tomorrow through a doppler? I only weigh 110, maybe a little more. I am nervous due to the fact that a friend of mine heard her babies heartbeat the day before I had my u/s and then a couple days later she m/c. I havent had any sever cramping nor any bleeding. Just some pulling and mild cramps here and there during the day. This is my first and we were ttc for 21 months! I just want this to be a sticky lil bean! Just wanted some advice! ;o)

Thanks!

I am also nervous to take another HPT...Please advise..Thanks..

heartbeat at 7 wks 3 days

My ultrasound today (7 wks 3d) said the babies heartbeat was 138. The doctor said it was normal. but everything I have read said it should be at 150 - 180. We were planning on telling our friends about the pregnancy if we had a strong enough heartbeat - but now we aren't sure if that is high enough to tell people or if it is really borderline low. What is the range the heartbeat should be in? And what is considered low?

Hey Dr Q or Dr Eva... a pregnancy question for you!

Hi Doctors,

I have a question for you. I went for my second prenatal today and I am about 10 weeks and 5 days pregnant. I asked them to try and find the heartbeat but they said it wasn't very likely that we would hear anything. Well, they were right, they couldn't find a heartbeat with the doppler. Is this very common? My aunt tried to tell me that she heard one of her kids at 8 weeks and one at 9 weeks... is this possible? Thanks for your help.

Threatened pregnancy

I am 7 weeks pregnant and have been spotting since Monday a few hours past my first prenatal exam. At first it was just brown spotting, then it turned into bright pink-red. I went to the ER, as it was very late. They did blood test and a transvaginal ultrasound. While she did the ultrasound, I asked her if my baby was alive, and she responded it may be too early to tell. She showed me where the gestational sac was, but she never mentioned a heartbeat. Immediately after the ultrasound I passed several tiny clots, and am still passing clots today. I can't see my Dr. untill Monday, so I am very nervous and scared. What are my chances of this being a healthy successful pregnancy after my results last night?

GES SAC AND FETAL POLE BUT NO HEARTBEAT?

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS. I HAD AN ULTRASOUND TODAY AND SAW THE SAC AND FETAL POLE BUT NO HEARTBEAT. I SAW A DOT ON THE FETAL POLE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS THE HEART TO ME BUT IT WASN'T BEATING. I'VE READ THAT ONCE YOU SEE THE FETAL POLE YOU SHOULD SEE A HEARTBEAT. I AM 5WKS3DAYS AND I'M REALLY SCARED THAT SOMETHING'S WRONG. I DO HAVE ANOTHER ULTRASOUND SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW BUT IT'S TO LOOK AT A CYST THAT I HAVE. MAYBE I CAN TALK THEM INTO LOOKING FOR THE HEARTBEAT AGAIN. ANYWAYS ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS

Heartbeat

I went to the doctors on friday and I was 11 weeks and one day and we were not able to hear the heartbeat. She tried for like 10 minutes. She had me go into an ultrasound room and we saw the heart flickering and beating away. I just wanted to know if that is normal not to hear the heartbeat and if it is still early. Thanks

Trying to stay strong TTC after recurrent M/C!!

So here I am 4 miscarriages later & 3 of them being in a row. This last m/c was so shocking to me! I had a good fetal heart beat that I heard & saw @ 7 & 8 weeks...(here's my u/s w/the baby I lost recently: ) but then when I went for my CVS they told me there was no heart beat & the baby measured around 8 weeks!! I had that horrible news on 8/22...I was suppose to be 12 weeks! And 8/25 I had my d&c which went horrible...had a lot of blood loss & other complications. After my d&c I had a candle vigil for him/her(here's the pic of the candle vigil : ) & also after my d&c I ended up bleeding for 19days! I did everything I could to not miscarry, I was on all kinds of meds, but I still lost the baby in the end! This has been so hard to stay strong & positive that I will get & stay pregnant...that not every BFP will end in M/C...I'm just so scared when I TTC now...that I'll never be able to have a baby w/my dh! It's a rough road on the journey to motherhood I keep praying that I'll get to hold my baby in my arms 1 day. I'm so tired of the empty arms of no baby to hold, the heartache, the cramps left right after m/c as a reminder, the feeling of being hopless because you feel like giving up TTC. Well here I am now waiting for AF after having 1 BFP on 9/24(here's a pic of that evap line bfp: ) & nothing but BFN after that so I assume it was an evap line...I'm tempted to give up, but w/the probs I have @ my age now I just know they will just get worse later when I try again when I'm older & I want my daughter to be close in age w/her future sibs. Well...I'm try so hard to belive I will have a baby w/my dh 1 day... I'll keep you all posted how things go for me & I could use some encouragement & prayers!

I feel it is a boy, it just looked like a boy to me haha, we dont have a preference but i hear the heartbeat theory is just an oldwives tale, but looking at my son and daughters 13 week scan my daughters was 163bpm and my sons was 153bpm.it was been been very active he get moving around and making it hard to get the measurements, so that would have to have some impact on it surely?? oohh i cant wait for my 18 week scan!!!!has anyone got any thoughts?? I did have strong feelings with my other two and both times i was right!!

6 week ultrasound

I went for my 6 week ultrasound today and we could only see the yolk sac. I was expecting to see the baby and heartbeat. The tech said that my uterous is way back and this is why. Does this sound right to you or should I be worried?

11 weeks and a bit paranoid!!

hi ladies, i am going on 11 weeks, i have finally gotten over the dreaded m/s and besides being tired i feel 'normal'again my bbs are still larger but not as sore. I went to my doc today and she tried to hear the heartbeat with the doppler, but could not get anything. I have started to poke out in my tummy, as it is my third but i have only put on 1kg. my doc said there was nothing to worry about that you cant always get the h/b this early with the doppler?? you just natrually worry!! I am due to get my first u/s at 12.5 weeks.

Heartbeat with doppler?

Hi Dr Q and Girls!

Back from my vacation and already have lots of questions!

1) When can one hear the baby's heartbeat with a doppler? I have read that some hear it as early as 8 weeks. Is this too soon?

2) After hearing a heartbeat at 8 weeks, what are the chances of having a missed m/c. Still PARANOID about this!!!!

Thanks a ton!
