IVF--Why the false hope?

I want to know why the Dr. would let me drag on like this without talking to me about any of this ivf stuff? I took a pregnancy test on 13 days past retrieval and it was positive...had some symptoms. My hcg level was 94.7 on 13dpr, 138 on 15dpr, 169 on 17dpr and I'm waiting on my beta numbers from today. I haven't heard any success stories from these numbers! Has there been any cases where this has been normal pregnancy? I have doubts and don't have much hope.

The things people Say!!!

So I decided to start a discussion on the stupid things people say when to those TTC. This is a space where you can feel free to vent and let it all out. This is a safe place for venters so please no ridicule on the venting! :)

Some of the things I hate the most:

"stop trying so hard, then you'll get pregnant"

"fertility drugs?! Your going to end up with ten babies!" (best response "so?")

"Go in for adoption... you'll get pregnant right away!" (Seriously, how does that make any sense?)

There are plenty more, but I want to hear all of yours!

Doctor won't see me!

Hi Dr. Q,

Thank goodness for you, because my doctor will not see me until I turn 35 in December! I find this just outrageous. Now, I have to waste 2 more months waiting to reach the magical birthday before my fertility concerns are taken seriously.

As you know from my posts, I've been doing everything right (getting regular periods, positive OPKs every month, sex during fertile period), and I'm still not pregnant. I would think a responsible doctor would at least do a preliminary work up to rule out the obvious.

I pay so much money for health care, and I can't believe that I'm being turned down for care.

Please shed some light on this, Dr. Q, as this is so upsetting! There is literally NOTHING I can do to help myself get pregnant!

UPDATE AFTER SEEING DOC

Hello all,

I had a very good appt. today and got tons of questions answered. The good news is that after listening and looking at my calendar (where I record EVERYTHING, including lmp dates, sex, opks, etc) she thinks that DH and I aren't having enough sex around ovulation. She noticed that we have sex in the days leading up to a positive LH surge, but then sex drops off, when in reality, we ought to continue for another 2-3 days, since it's hard to pinpoint EXACTLY when my egg is released. So that is one possible answer.

She also said that given the fact that we've only been trying for 4 months, and I have regular periods, further testing is not necessary now. She thinks that we should concentrate on having more sex both before AND after LH surge. And she's right, we have not been doing that.

She also said, however, that if we're still not pregnant in 6 months, I should come back in to get a thorough fertility check.

The bad news? I got my period right after I left the doc's office. While I was there she also had me give blood for a preg. test, which came back NEGATIVE(as if my period wasn't enough!).

I must say, I feel MUCH BETTER after speaking with my doctor. She took the time to review my medical history including paps, etc., answer all of my questions, and I now understand that getting pregnant isn't always easy. I am a Type A personality, so I have a tendency to want to control everything, and seek explanations for everything. It's not simply about timing things right; there are so many factors that we can't control that come into play. I have a much healthier attitude about it now and I hope that in time, we'll be successful.

So, I'll endure AF now, and see what happens next month. Thank you to Dr. Q for your prompt and informative answers. Many women, including myself, seek comfort and information from you as they go through what can be a stressful time. This is a great service you are providing to women, and I have nothing but good things to say about your website. Thanks to everyone, and good luck to everyone here. I'll post again soon, I'm sure!
