Effacement or Dilation

hey ladies. wondered if anyone knew, what is a more clear indication you can go into labor at any time, effacement or dilation?

i know you have to be fully effaced and dilated to deliver, but i wondered if the ladies who've recently given birth can shed light on this.

Question about dialation/effacement for mothers

Hello - I am currently 35 weeks and very anxious to deliver my baby girl...

Just wondering, when you begin dialating and such, can you tell? I know nothing is happening yet because I had an appointment yesterday - I just wonder if when it does start happening, will I know?

Dr. Q, I'm confused :-(

I just had my 38-week prenatal appt. this morning and I was told that I'm only 1 cm and 25% effaced????? Last week, I was 2 cm and 50% effaced, then at the hospital, I was 3 cm and 50% effaced. Then this morning, I went from 3 cm to 1 cm and 25% effaced??? How could that happen?

Before anything else, there are two different doctors who see me from that clinic, and it was a different doctor who checked me last week. When she told me that I'm only 1 cm and 25% effaced, I asked he how that could be since I have been consistently 2-3 cm and 50% effaced...she said, there's no way I could be 50% effaced because my cervix still felt very thick. I was also annoyed when I asked her about having a membrane sweep possibly around 39 weeks if I wouldn't go on labor this week...she said she doesn't do that and that she will only induce at 42 weeks. The other doctor told me a total different thing. The other doctor said she can perform a membrane sweep at around 39 weeks. I also told her about my strong and painful contractions and she was just very passive about it and told me that some women just experience more painful pre-labor contractions and some of them tend to experience harder labor than normal.

I understand that different doctors have different opinions, but can their opinions really differ that much? I am so scared that I won't dilate until 42 weeks...the baby might be too big by then! I am just disappointed... :-(
