Bleeding???

My periods are very irrerular, I was put on Provera to start my period, then on Clomid. I used the Ovulation Kit to determin the best time for me to get pregnant. My next period is on the 26-27 of October. Its the 23rd and I just went to the bathroom and I have a real dark blood coming out. Does that mean I started my period??? Which means I am NOT pregnant....ahhh

Its real dark, like old blood. Can you still be pregnant, even if you bleed?

Does clomid act to mature eggs?

Hi Dr Q or Dr Littman, wondered if you could clarify something. In a recent post by Jilly titled "Give it to me in a nutshell please", Dr Littman gave some advise that confused both myself and Jilly. It was suggested that our eggs may not be good ones because we have long cycles, and that clomid may mature the eggs. My understanding is that clomid does not mature the egg, but just stimulates ovulation. Can you please clarify this. Many thanks.

Acupuncture--Trying it during my TTC journey

Hello,

I know many of us consider using acupuncture to assist us and wonder if it can really help. Just wanted to share with everyone that I started acupuncture when my Dr. took me off Follistim for a cycle due to 3 cysts from the previous cycle. It is still a little early to determine all the effects of the acupuncture for me.. but so far I can say that the cysts were gone by my regular expected AF time and I really do think that it has helped with my PMS and the effects of my Follistim injections. Last cycle of Follistim I had lots and lots of cramps and bloating. This cycle I really don't feel any cramps at all and the bloating is not bad at all. My DH agrees that I am much calmer and not so "obsessed" with all this TTC stuff. I will keep you posted on any other things I notice along the way.

Please help me !

In april 2006, my daughter was in a car accident and needed xrays when they did them they found a mass on her ovary which was a dermoid and she had it removed in november 2006 along with one of her ovaries(which we were told the dermoid took over the whole ovary and it could not be saved). My daughter who is going to be 20 in 9 days didnt get a period until she was 15 ever now after surgery and being put on the nuva ring to regulate her period, shell only get a period for 1 day. she also says that if she wears a pad the blood is only on one side of the pad. she is very frustrated not getting a period becuase she feels it makes her less feminine. she also get some boils on the side of her face(she says they are not pimples) and has some strays hairs that pop up on her face which she plucks quickly. her doctor thought she had pcos but did bloodwork and now said she doesnot. i want a second opinion. what kind of doctor do i look for? a specialist? if so, in what area? or a regular board certified obgyn....please help me and shed some light on this situation...

thank you so very much

maria g.

How does ovulation occur?

It is your brain (hypothalamus and pituitary) that produces hormones that signal the ovary to produce and usually select out only one follicle (the sac that contains the egg) out of many per month once your period starts.

The hypothalamus secretes GnRH hormone that triggers the pituitary to secrete both FSH and LH hormones. It is the FSH and LH hormones that help the ovary create and grow a follicle. Once the follicle is “mature”, the follicle tells the brain (the pituitary in particular) that it is ready to be ovulated through the sustained production of a large amount of estrogen (this is what gives you the egg white cervical mucus).

The pituitary reads this and in response, secretes a large amount of the ovulatory hormone (LH) to allow the follicle to ovulate the egg about 36 hours later.

Your OPK kits detect this “LH surge” and that’s how we know you’re going to ovulate. Once you have ovulated, the remaining follicle turns into the Corpus Luteum that creates lots of Progesterone for the next 14 days.

It is the Progesterone that creates your rise in body temperature that is detected on BBTs and gives you many types of symptoms, such as breast tenderness. The Corpus Luteum only lasts for 14 days and unless you’re pregnant, will die off and stopping the production of Progesterone and Estrogen. Once your uterus senses that there’s no more Progesterone or Estrogen, it sheds off it’s lining (a process commonly known as a period) and the cycle repeats itself.
