over the counter acne creams and face washes

Dear Dr.,

I am very panicked about the fact that i went to my dermatologist today because i have developed cystic acne with my pregnancy. I told her that i have always used clearasil products for everyday use but it is not controlling the acne i have now. She told me that benzoyl peroxide and salyclic acid products are considered a class c drug and not safe for pregnancy. I am wondering if you have any information about this subject as i am very scared that i have put my baby at risk i am 11 weeks pregnant.

Dr. Q & Ladies - AFP screening?

What are you thoughts on the AFP only screeening to check for Neural Tube defects. Do you think this is a good idea and if elevated risk what will the level 2 ultrasound show?

A Quick Question

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a male. I took a small dose of Cephradine (about 500 mg total) and melatonin (0.5mg) a couple of days ago. I wonder if they have any adverse effect on sperm quality or not. My wife is trying to conceive these months. I am not sure if those drugs could cause sperm mutation that leads to birth defects or not.

Thank you very much for your time and your help.

Sincerely yours,

Richard

DR when's the earliest I can do CVS?

I wanna know when I can have chorionic villus sampling (CVS), a prenatal test used to detect genetic defects such as Tay-Sachs, sickle cell anemia, most types of cystic fibrosis and Down syndrome...etc. I've heard 12weeks, but can it be done before 12weeks? And also is it true you can also find out the baby's gender from this test as well?

Diabetes, Miscarriage and trying again

Hi Doc,

I became pregnant w/ twins through IVF last February 2008 and had a miscarriage on May 18, 2008. I was almost 12 weeks at the time. I was hospitalized and was told that I had Type 2 diabetes and that the babies would have a 30% chance of birth defects because my Hemoglobin A1C was 10.3. I was told a Hemoglobin A1C over 8 increased the risk to 30%.

I was obviously not aware that I had type 2 diabetes and I was devastated to find this out. I was further devastated that it could pose such a great risk to both myself and the babies.

I have 3 questions for you:

1) Prior to proceeding w/ IVF, shouldnt my fertility doctor have performed a simple blood sugar test on me to clear me for possible diabetes and is a blood sugar test part of the panel of tests that fertility doctors typically do prior to having a patient proceed w/ IVF?

2) How low should my Hemoglobin A1C be and for how long should I maintain it at that level before I should get pregnant to make sure that both me and my baby remain healthy?

3) What is your opinion on taking Metformin to control blood sugars while pregnant? If you do not recommend it, what medication would be safe for both mother and baby during pregnancy? Is using insulin during the whole 9 mos to control my blood sugars the safest way?

Thank you for your help!

defects

Iv been by some ppl, including health professionals that because I have PCOS and ENDOMETRIOSIS that when I do conceive that the baby has a high chance on birth defects and of coming early is this true? Also I'v been advised whn I do conceive I should have a c section as I have very low iron and could bleed out wat do you suggest? Would having low iron be contributing to not being able to conceive and having a past miscarriage?

DES and birth defects

Hi Dr. Q,

I am asking on behalf of my sister who is 8 weeks pregnant. She has been giving her dog DES for several months now (the same DES that women stopped taking because of birth defects. My question is what birth defects does it cause? Is there any evidence that just handling the medication is harmful to unborn babies? My sister is extremely upset and worried seeing as how the baby was measuring smaller than what was originally thought. They have a pretty good idea as to when conception took place since she was taking clomid and ovulation testing before conception. Please tell me everything you know about the potential dangers.
