My Journey includes, MMC's, Successful PG, MTHFR and Luteal Phase Defect

DH and I were married in March 03 and I went off BC one month later.

We were'nt "trying" but just letting things happen. In Nov 03 I

started spotting about the time my period was supposed to start but

it was weird so I called the Dr. and he did a beta, it was not good,

so he did another and it went down, so m/c #1. We were told, as I am

sure all of you were, its just one of those things, next time will be

different. Well, we got pregnant again in Feb 04 and the day after

my initial beta blood draw at about 5 weeks, I started to m/c. So,

when I went in to see my Dr. after that m/c (#2), he had this "deer

in the headlights" look because I was only 24, and I had 2 m/c back

to back... so he basically said, you need to go to a specialist,

which I went to an AWESOME perinatalogist( Dr. Tracy Papa -Fort Worth,

TX) and she ran all the panels she could run on me at the time (now 4

years ago) and all that came back was progesterone deficency at 3 DPO

was a "1". Whoah. So my next pregnancy, she started my on Crinone at

the first + test. Conceived in July 04, I had my DD March 2005 at 38

weeks, no problemo, except for 20 weeks of puking! So, last summer,

we wanted to start trying again... we weren't on BC or anything, just

watching my cycle carefully. We got preggers the 1st month trying

and started progesterone and saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks and went back

in at 11 weeks for a followup U/S and the baby had died about 1 week

before. I had D&C but it was too late for Chromosonal panels. Got

the go ahead to try again in January, got preggers again in Feb 08,

started prgesterone right away, went in for U/S at 8 weeks and saw

about a 5-6 week embryo and no heartbeat, m/c naturally the next

week. Since it had been 4 years since my panel, my Peri told me lots

of things have been discovered to cause m/c that they can test for.

So she took like half of my blood, and ran the panels and i came up

positive for the MTHFR mutation. I don't know exactly which one, she

just said I got a copy from each of my parents... can you ladies tell

me what that is called? Anyway, the protocol for the MTHFR they

gave me is Folgard x 2 a day, 1 BA, and lovenox injections upon

pregnancy acheival.

Phase II: I have still be a little freaked because I read about how

my progesterone deficency is only a symptom of a greater problem,

poor follicle development and that a luteal phase defect can be

corrected with clomid. My LP is only 9-11 days long generally.

Well, my OB sent me to an RE to be treated with the clomid and I

started my cycle while waiting for my appt. 1 day late. I didn't to

a hpt, like I normally do to be safe, because I thought I wouldn't be

pregnant, and my cycle was weird, it lasted 14 days and it usually

only lasts 4-6 days, so I spoke with the RE and she did a beta and I

was pregnant and m/c again. So, that was even further confirmation

the LP defect and the need to start the clomid treatment along with

progesterone after O.

Anyone had a similar story? Sorry so long. Has anyone taken clomid

for luteal phase defect?

Mendi from Texas

29 years

#1 MC 11/03

#2 MC 03/04

DD born 03/05

#3 MC 11/07

#4 MC 03/08

#5 MC 09/08

MTHFR mutation (2 copies), Luteal Phase Defect

Starting first round of clomid and progesterone after O 11/08

Prenatals, Folgard 2.2 x 2 a day, BA, and Lovenox upon pregnancy

Starting Clomid

We've been trying for a year and my obgyn wanted to start me on Clomid, she thinks I have luteal phase defect. First we had to get a semen analysis. And my husband had bi-lateral varicocele. His sperm count was a slight lower than normal and the motility was only 25%. He just had surgery last Friday to repair it. Hopefully it works. I just started my period today. Should I call my ob to see if she wants me to start clomid this month or at least give her a heads up of whats going on?

Dr. Q... Luteal Phase Defects?

Dr. Q... I hope that you can help me understand a little more about luteal phase defects...

If you have a luteal phase defect, I know they usually give you progesterone, but if you took Clomid, is progesterone cream necessary?

How is a LP Defect diagnosed?

Is it bad to use progesterone cream if you haven't actually been diagnosed with a LP Defect?

Which OTC progesterone cream do you personally recommend?

I really wished that I lived closer to LA so you could be my doctor! :0)

Luteal Phase Defect - Anyone Else?

After my miscarriage last March, I started charting. As the months went on, I noticed that my luteal phase was inconsistent and oftentimes very short. I finally got the opportunity to show the charts to my doctor and speak with him about possible issues, and he agrees that I have a luteal phase defect. He put me on progesterone vaginal suppositories, so I will start those tomorrow (I just happened to ovulate the day before my appointment).

I am just wondering if anyone else has dealt with a LPD, what treatment (if any) you were given, and whether or not you have gone on to have a successful pregnancy. Thanks in advance for any experience/information you can share!

Question about natural progesterone cream.

Hello,

I recently submitted a question inquiring about my short luteal phase. My husband and I have been trying to conceive since September 2007. I became pregnant in February 2008, but miscarried in March at 6 weeks. Since that time I have been charting and have noticed that I have a short luteal phase. Out of the four complete cycles since the miscarriage, I have had luteal phases of 11, 9, 14 and 10 days. I am worried that I have a luteal phase defect and that it is keeping me from conceiving.

That brings me to my question. I am currently 4 days past ovulation and I am wondering if it would be safe to start using a natural progesterone cream. My husband and I tried extra hard to get pregnant this month, and I am worried that I will not be able to get pregnant if I have a luteal phase defect. From what I have read, you should start using the cream immediately after ovulation. I am basically wondering if starting the cream 5 days past ovulation (b/c I would start tomorrow) would still be helpful. And if so, are there any over-the-counter brands that you can recommmend?

I have an appointment to see my OBGYN on 9/19/08, but I was wondering if there was something I could do now to help my chances of getting pregnant between now and then.

Thanks so much for any guidance that you can provide!!

Best,

Christina

Progesterone Supplmentation and Implantation

On an earlier question Dr. Eva said that progesterone supplements should be started around 3 dpo to help correct an LPD. I have been told that progesterone supplementation before implantation and can interfere with implantation. Is this bad information? TIA.

LP Defect Question

It has become clear that I have an LP defect. I ovulate late in my 28 day cycle. I'm on my second round of Clomid (100 mg on days 3 -7 this cycle) and as of today (CD15) I have not received a + OPK. In fact, the test line is not showing up. I had a trans-vaginal u/s on Friday and my OB indicated that I had 3 follicles that looked ready to ovulate, one of them measured 20.

My question is: If it is obvious that my LP is going to be short again this cycle, should we continue to actively ttc or should we avoid getting pg this cycle? If I were to conceive, is there something that can be done about the short LP, or would I be doomed to another m/c? Follow up question: how many days past ovulation can a quant hcg diagnose pregnancy?

Thank you in advance.
