Why is it so hard to get prescribed clomid in the uk?!!!

Natasha, that is quite interesting..I also ovulate on my own, but no luck in ttc yet. When I first met my RE and asked him about Clomid he basically said that they don't like prescribing it to women who ovulate, because it might actually end up doing more harm than good. He said that Clomid may thin the uterine lining and also dry up the cervical mucus which makes it harder for the sperm to travel. However, his approach was that that was his opinion. I felt that if I really wanted to try it, he'd let me do it, he just needed to tell me the downside. I am in Canada, btw. I weighed my options and decided to do injectables instead...has the Doctor given you any other options to consider, given the length if time you have been trying? Is there a way to see another Dr. for a second opinion if you do want to try Clomid?

I ovulate on my own and was Rx Clomid, but it produced no better results than without it. Our issue is male-factor infertility.

I met with a different RE yesterday and he said that as long as I AM ovulating on my own, the only reaason to Rx a drug like Clomid or Femara would be to shorten my somewhat-long cycles. And like silver said, Clomid CAN make things worse by thinning your uterine lining and drying up mucus.

Has your hubby's sperm been tested? You know, HALF of infertility in couples is because of issues with sperm. And have YOU had an HSG? Perhaps your tubes are blocked?

Btw, I have never heard about Clomid preventing you from ovulating, or causing ovarian cancer. I think most Doctors will not want you to use it for more than 6 cycles anyway, and usually just 3 or 4...And like Melissa said, it's very important to get all of the fertility testing done when one has been ttc for this long, to rule out any issues. Thx for your answers ladies, well this was the opinion of a Doc that was part of my recurrent miscarriage panel and it was quite a few months ago. I am due to see an RE this monday but i had a quick telephone conversation with his secretary & she basically told me the same thing...no way would I be prescribed clomid if i ovulate on my own because the side effects and risks involved. I was under the illusion that clomid was a very safe drug since it seems to be dished out like smarties in the US. I really wanted to give it a go as i heard that it can sometimes improve egg quality but it Looks like im going to have a real challenge if i want a doc to prescribe it to me :(

Btw thisismelissa, my bf has had a SA done , the first one came back with low morphology but after taking fertilaid it improved to normal levels. That was almost a year ago so not sure what his sperm is like atm. Hopefully the RE will do further investigation. Although im not even sure if the RE will take us on cos his secretary told me that normally you can only see an RE on nhs if you have had NO pregnancies within a 2 year time frame, and because my last pregnancy was in march (chemical) i didnt qualify as 'infertile'. She sounded very sympathetic & said she would try her best to get me an appointment, hold & behold and hour late she called back saying she had pulled a few strings and managed to get me an appointment the following week. It will be interesting to see if this RE is prepared to help me or if we will need to go private.

Wish me luck... so fed up of getting my period every month!

Thisismelissa i meant to add that i had a hysteroscopy and few months back and apparently everything looks completely normal inside.

Dont think my tubes are blocked as ive managed to fall pregnant 4 times in last year and a half... my problem is getting them to stick! Just started acupuncture and yoga so maybe that might help...who knows but anything is worth a try :)
