when are you considered high risk?

October 05, 2008

i have had two miscarriages (10wks and 6 wks) and no successful pregnancies. i will be going thru my first IUI treatment this month.

when does the ob doc consider you high risk? after already having two prior miscarriages i would really like to be checked every 2 weeks instead of every 4 weeks by the doc. can anyone help?

One can consider having a recurrent miscarrage work-up done, although ABOG recommends this be performed after 3miscarriages..

Regardless, this wouldn't necessarily put you in high risk, and your Ob would still consider monthly check-ups in the first two trimesters

I don't think you would actually be considered high risk without further testing. With no testing, they will continue to say its just one of those things that happen. First, I would ask for testing, genetic and otherwise, Then, I would ask you doctor to monitor you closely just for your mental well-being. They know you have had two miscarriages and should do this just to help you feel better and cause a little less stress on the pregnancy.

thanks drq and TTC,

i agree...i know that when i do become pregnant again i will be a nervous wreck the entire pregnancy. i have recently started seeing a RE and i believe he did a workup on me. he drew blood and ran lots of test to find out why ive miscarried. i was told that everything came back normal. he said he believes my miscarriages are from lack of hormones to sustain a pregnancy. i will start taking aspirin and progesterone once i start my treatments.

i hope to find an OB doc that will appreciate what ive been thru and agree to see me every 2 weeks instead of every 4weeks once i become pregnant.

i have one more question...

will your RE see you for the first 3mths? or will you jus go to an OB once you become pregnant?

thanks

Kris,

I can't answer your question about seeing an RE versus your OB but I can tell you if you have the 'right' doctor they will see you more often. After I miscarried, I was a nervous wreck and wanted to be seen more often. I was put on progesterone suppositories and my doctor saw me frequently. I had u/s at 5,6,9,12 weeks. I am high risk any way because I turn 35 before my baby is born. Any time I felt I needed to be seen my OB saw me even though she probably didn't have to see me.

Where do you live?

hi amy, i live in louisiana. i hope to find a doc like that. my first pregnancy i miscarried at 10 weeks bc of a blood clot on the placenta. i spotted for almost 4wks and i was constantly calling my doc. when i would go to him with my concerns, he thought i was being ridiculous. he kinda give me the 3rd degree and made me feel uneasy about calling his office when i was cramping and bleeding. i hope to find one here that will understand my fears and where i coming from with all my concerns. you were very lucky!

Kris, must women stay with their RE until about 10 or 12 weeks. I am considered high risk. I see my OB every 2 or 3 weeks. I also see a Peri once a month.

Kris-My RE did a hcg blood test at four weeks/ultrasound 6 weeks/ultrasound 8 weeks. My RE sends you back to your OBGYN at 8 weeks after he is certain that you have a viable pregnancy.

thanks so much ladies...its so sad that i am already so nervous about my next pregnancy and im not even pregnant yet..LOL

i think seeing 2 doctors during the first trimester will help me feel more comfortable.

kan, why are you considered high risk? have you had previous miscarriages?

Kris,

Perhaps you could look into switching to another OB in the mean time? Not sure but I would go to someone who cares. My last OB was so heartless during my miscarriage and after. She's like, we'll see you when you get pregnant again. I'm thinking, no you won't. Take time to find the right doctor. Ask friends, family, co-workers, etc. Its so important (I'm sure you already know this!).

Keep us posted. Hope you get a BFP soon.

Kris, I had a m/c last year and am now 13 weeks pregnant. We had been seeing an RE and took clomid for 2 months when I got preggers. My RE put me on progesterone suppositories and baby aspirin right away to help sustain the pregnancy.
