When are progesterone supplements during pregnancy helpful?

August 22, 2008

My progesterone at 4wks 5days was 15.79ng/mL

This is within the normal range, but lower than average, right?

I have had one miscarriage between 5 and 6 weeks and one missed miscarriage (development stopped before 6 weeks, but I didn't start bleeding until 12 weeks) in the last year.

My luteal phases over the last year have all been 12 or 13 days long.

So is this a situation in which supplemental progesterone would be helpful?

I am an inclined to think not because if low progesterone were the problem why would I have carried the one pregnancy 6 weeks past when the baby stopped developing, but I can't get ahold of my doc to ask her and I'd like a professional opinion.

Thanks!

When progesterone is between 5 and 25 ng/mL this is the gray zone where it can be good or bad. Progesterone supplementation definitely wouldn't hurt anything.

My progesterone was 12 and my doc. put me on prog. suppositories. I'm 13 weeks now. My pregnancy prior ended in a miscarriage at 8 weeks. It cannot hurt anything at all. Hopefully it will help. She just took me off of it. Hope this helps...
