Whats the risks????

April 16, 2008

Hi, I just got back from a hearing check and I Im going deaf in my right ear (only have 30% hearing) and have slight deafness in left ear but still have 90% hearing in the left. They told me that it would all be related to when I was a baby as I was born with a 'cleft palete'. I didnt have a roof of my mouth and had a split in top lip almost all the way to my nose. This was corrected with plastic surgery whn I was a 9months old. I was wondering what would be the risks of me having a cleft palete baby (not preggo atm but just want to know the risks).

Im having to go see a ear nose and throat doc to see if he can correct my hearing. But would like to know if it is a risk or a chance that when I have a child if they would be cleft palete . Also while Im asking about passing things on what would be the chances that I pass my endo/pcos issues being passed on. And what would be the chances of my bf's hyposidea (spellt it wrong sorry) being passed on?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Just want to be as informed as possible....

Awww sweetie I'm so sorry. I have no clue about this but I know there is so much new technology these days. How they spoken to you about hearing aids? These days they are so small....several friends of mine have them and they are great. Just think if there is someone you don't want to listen to you could just turn them off and you will not have to listen to the big chops flapping...lol

Sending you thoughts and prayers!!!!!

a friend of mine which by the way is a man and his wife both had the cleft and they had two girls with not even a small amount of cleft palate shown so i guess it depends

Haha Angel good idea about being able to turn off. Hmm could think of a few 'know it alls' that I'd love to do that too lol. All they have told me atm is how bad the hearing is and that I need to see a ear nose and throat doc coz they may be able to op on some bone and it MIGHT correct it...

Mrs ~ Thanx for letting me know about your friends. I know it can be caused by toxins etc but wasnt so sure about it being passed on. Will wait and see wat dr q says. Just want to be informed as much as possible...

Hi flutter,

all of these issues are transmitted to the subsequent generation in a "multifactorial" manner...meaning we don't really how it's transmitted but it is...with many in the next generation not affected but others are...PCOS transmission is better understood, with some believing dominant allele transmission...These, however, shouldn't discourage you from becoming a mother as many people get pregnant even naturally and have healthy children...

Hi flutter, I am a speech pathology student and happend to have a cleft palate clinic last friday. That is where we meet with several kids who have cleft lip/palate. They get to see speech, audiology, orthodontics, oral maxillo facial surgeon, a genetisist, etc. We had 12 kids come through on friday and I believe all but one or two were labelled as isolated cases by the genetisist (and I don't believe any had parents with clefts). She said there is only about a 3-4% chance that cleft palate would be "passed down", so the chances are slim. I do know people who have clefts and their kids do too, but I also know a lot of people who just happend to have kids with cleft palate. They just don't know what causes it. But just think, this day and age, clefts are so easy to repair that if you were going to have some type of birth defect, this isn't the worst you could have. Many of the kids I saw, you couldn't even tell they had had a cleft.

Thanx dr q for the info. Im not going to letif stop me becoming a mum but thought I would just be prepared incase it accurred. Like I said I was a cleft palate baby and it has never really had an impact on me. It actually always made me feel kind of spesh, coz Id had plastic surgery lol

MM thank you also for your info. Your in such a wonderful field of work and Im sure every person you help with there speech will gr8ly appriciate it. I remember whn I was having speech pathology for my cleft I loved it and the lady. I quietly thank her reg for helping me be able to live a 'normal' life without the fear of someone picking on my speech prob (I still have a slight speech prob but only sometimes, it comes and goes).
