Whats the real scoop on alcohol and breast milk?

June 20, 2008

I personally don't drink alcohol.. but.. I was having a discussion about breastfeeding and drinking the other day.. and I want to know the real information.

Is it safe to drink while breastfeeding? If so, how much is safe? The person I talked to said that if you are bf'ing you should pump your milk and dump it after drinking, and feed the baby milk pumped prior to drinking for one feeding.

HOWEVER... I remember reading that you should drink right after feeding the baby, and by the time the baby eats again, as long as you only have one or two drinks, there won't be much left in the milk, because it doesn't stay in the milk, it filters out into your bloodstream.

Also, some random person at the grocery store was talking to me about bf'ing and said that his gf was told to drink beer b/c it would help establish her milk, and that babies like the taste of alcohol flavored milk, and so they drink it better....

So...

1. Whats the real deal on drinking and safety of milk..

2. Does alcohol really help baby want the milk?

Alcohol will make you produce more milk, and while moderate amounts of alcohol may be Ok while breastfeeding (and it does go into breastmilk), this can not be recommended from a medical standpoint to be Ok to do

Interesting Dr Q.. I am not sure the baby will like drinking alcholic milk..but I did not know it would help with milk supply----

I was told if you are going to nurse after drinking and its been less than 3 hours then you need to pump and dump... I also an not a big drinker so it was never an issue for me
