What type of Doctor is needed to get a sperm analysis lab order?

Hey Bree! As far as what kind of doctor can do the test, it depends. It's usually a urologyst or a fertility specialist. My OBGYN was able to provide the prescription necessary to go and have the test done. They'll probably start with a semen analysis for your DH. He'll go into a nice cozy medical room, take care of his business in a cup and then the lab will analyze it. They'll inspect the semen, check to see how many of his swimmers swim straight, make sure a good number of them have the correct shaped and sized heads and how many have good tails. Then they'll give you a count of how many there are and those will be your results. That's usually the extent of the testing done on DH. The SA results really tell you a lot-if there are abnormalcies they may re-test.

Also, not to deminish the 9 months of ttc that you've been through, but a healthy couple isn't considered to have fertility issues unitl they've been trying for 12 months. Every month you've got only about a 1 in 4 chance of actually conceiving and it may just be an unfortunate luck of the draw that your little bundle of joy hasn't arrived yet.

oh, and remember to have 2 tests done three months apart cuz its takes abotu 90 days for new sperm to mature so if you end up having a crappy test result you can test it again and hopefully it was a fluke.

HI! When my dh got his S/a it was ordered by my obgyn and then read by a urologist. So i'm sure you could go to your obgyn/RE or a urologist. I would suggest trying to find a urologist that specializes in fertility. We found one after going to a regular urologist who was of no help and just told us the results. GL!

thanks all! i guess i need to find an ob/gyn. all i have right now is a regular doctor. his appt is on the 5th so i'll try to update and let you know how it went. do you normally get the results back pretty quick, or does it take awhile?

so dh did his thing yesterday...he's really worried about the results because of his diabetes...has anybody had any issues with diabetes before? we're just waiting for the results but super nervous!!!!!
