What is the ideal estrogen level at ovulation? What causes low estrogen?

November 02, 2009

I am 27 and have PCOS. My husband and I have been TTC #1 for almost two years. I am on Metformin, but do not seem to ovulate on my own. We tried Clomid for a few months and, after that did not work, moved on to Follistim & Femara.

Three days ago, I had an appointment for an ultrasound to look for mature follicles. My follicles were only at 10-14mm, so they had me do 3 more days of Follistim injections, hoping that they would grow to maturity. Today when I went back (CD14), I had two mature follicles -- 17.5mm and 19mm. Also, my estrogen level had increased from 44 on Friday (CD11) to 122 today (CD14). The nurse told me that this was close to being on target.

However, when I Googled that (as I have a tendency to do), I found that this seems to be low for having two follicles. Is that correct? Do I have reason to believe this cycle will not work because of my estrogen level, or is it okay? What could be the cause of having a low estrogen level?

Thanks SO much!

A follicle will produce about 200pg/mL of Estradiol at ovulation.. this number will vary however, if taking Femara (much lower) or increase if taking Follistim

Blondie I have the same concerns about estrogen levels.

I have been trying to conceive for over 3 years, I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2007. Started femara 5mg cd 3-7. Follistim 75ui cd 7 and 9. Went in for follicle scan cd 10(fri). I had several follicles but only 2 decent size, 1 at 16mm on one side and 13 mm on other. My lining is 5.6. My e2 level was 35.9. RE left me a message to do another 75u fri night (cd10) and Saturday night (cd11) of the follistim, then ovidrel on Sunday night (cd12) then do iui on Tues (cd14). I guess I am just worried about the lining and e2 levels. Not worried about follicle size because they say they grow 1-2 mm a day.

HI evryone - I am not on any meds except for Metformin for mild PCOS and insulin resistance. I have been on this since May and have definitely felt a difference. I have also been doing acupuncture and natural supplements to help with ovulation and just overall wellness and have absolutely loved it - my cycles are more normal as is my ovulation. So with that being a little background...

I had some tests run on CD17 - the day I had a positive OPK. My levels were:

LH - 97.7

Testosterone - 81

Estrogen 423

Can anyone give me any insight on these levels?
