What is a leftover cyst & free fluid?

Left over cysts from fertility treatments are usually pretty common in the first trimester. These cysts were usually the follicles that created the egg, ovulated, and became the corpus luteum which then maintains the pregnancy. Sometimes, these do bleed a little, creating the cul-de-sac fluid they saw creating a lot of pelvic irritation and pain. Sometimes, so much so, that many Ob/Gyns sometimes get fooled by the pain because it's soo severe that they think the patient has an ectopic pregnancy! In other words, you do get our sympathies. Other things that could create this fluid + pain that I'm sure was evaluated by the ER docs would have been an appendicitis.

The risk of miscarriage still primarily depends on maternal age and how far along the pregnancy is. Women under 35 have a much lower risk, along with those who are over 8, let alone 10 weeks gestation. If they saw a fetal heart beat on ultrasound at the ER yesterday, the light spotting is common and if under 35, your risk is more like 3-5%.

So every month you ovulate and a cyst forms but sometimes during the ovulation process you can have what is called a ruptured corpus luteum cyst. If there is a fetus inside the uterus at approximately 10 weeks gestational age, then the placenta will take over the progesterone production so rupture of the corpus luteum cysts at this point is of no consequence.
