What are the odds of HPV causing cervical cancer and having kids afterwards?
I wish diagnosed with HPV and my pap came back with abnormal cells in my cervix. I was supposed to get a colposcopy but never did. (apr. 09) What is the chance I have cervical cancer and will I be able to have another kid?

I definitely think you should go back...why havent you?
I dont know your odds, but i'll tell you my story.
I had a random pap done, i was 17 and had been on the pill for 2 years due to horrendous periods. My GP out of the blue said i should think of getting a pap done, as is protocol after being on the pill for that long. I went, was scared but expected everything to be normal. I had been with 1 boyfriend, so i really didnt have much reason to worry. The GP called me, saying it had come back abnormal and i needed a colposcopy to see how bad things were. The results of that came back as CIN3, so the last stage of cell abnormality before true cancer. I was completely shocked. The OB said this level normally means about 5 years+ of having the disease, which i knew was not applicable for me - i was sexually active at 16. I had a LEEP procedure and the cells were removed. I have not had any abnormal paps since then, Thank God.
So, it is very important for you to get yourself down to the OB and get a colposcopy (pretty much a pap, not much worse) to find out what's wrong.
Depending on the results, youhave a good chance at still having children. I have 2 children, and had no problem conceiving them. So, dont give up hope and just get yourself checked out!
Best of luck.

Chances are small that cervical cancer would have developed in this time frame but the abnormality certainly could have gotten worse. It is very important to get the colposcopy done ASAP before TTC because these abnormalities really cannot be removed during pregnancy. Your fertility will most likely not be affected by the abnormality but sometimes if the problem is advanced the procedures that must be done can affect fertility & the ability to carry a pregnancy to term. This is very uncommon but it does happen. The earlier these abnormalities are treated the better the prognosis & less the invasive/agressive your doc will need to be. The problem is when these problems are allowed to progress they go deeper & deeper into the cervix which means that more & more of the cervix itself will need to be removed. If a lot of the cervix is removed it can scar over & cause issues conceiving naturally & it will also shorten the overall length of the cervix which is what keeps your cervix from dilating too early during a pregnancy. I think you will most likely be just fine but there is no sense in wasting any more time & just hoping that things will turn out ok. I would get an appt ASAP & get this taken care of. Most women will abnormal paps will not even need a LEEP procedure, the colposcopy is usually enough to remove these small areas. Good Luck & let me know if you have any other questions, I am an OBGYN nurse.
