two heartbeats

September 12, 2008

Dr. Q,

I am 10 weeks pg and have had four ultrasounds so far. My first three ultrasounds showed one healthy heartbeat. Today the ultrasound showed what looked like two heartbeats pulsing at two different rhythms. The dr said this could be a pulse from the umbilical cord or twins. I have a high tech ultrasound on wednesday but am going to go crazy in the mean time. My question is how common is it for a twin to appear after this much time? and is it possible that this is just the umbilical cord?

Hi Alisa,

Although unlikely, there are identical twins that are diagnosed and noted this way as one may be "hiding" next to the other, and your next ultrasound should be able to definately see this if this is the case...

Keep us posted and let us know what they see...

It turned out to be just one little bean. I don't know what my Dr's machine was picking up last week but the u/s tech took her time and looked everywhere and only saw one. I have to say I am a little relieved but also disappointed, if that makes sense. The hb was 185 and it was moving all around.

Congrats sweetie and im guessing possibly a girl on the heartbeat rate :)

Its possible they were picking up the heartbeat from the umbilical cord, or that other thing thats lower that has a heartbeat as well.

Best wishes and glad all is well!
