twins but cardiac activity in only one

July 07, 2008

Dr Q I have CBAVD and my wife has conceived with twin gestational sacs out of which one has cardiac activity and it is 6.1 weeks. The other one measuring 1.53 cms and gest age 5.6 weeks has not developed cardiac activity and does not have a fetal node either. What will happen to the underdeloped gest sac? can it still develop normally? Or will it just disappear with / without affecting the normal one?

I'm sorry to see this and will keep you and your wife and your little ones in my prayers. I want to bump this question up for Dr. Q so he'll see it. I hope you get some good news!

The underdeveloped sac if it doesn't grow will simply be reabsorbed by the body without much consequence during the first trimester, this phenomenon is commonly called "vanishing twin"
