TTC with Thyroid levels of 12

August 01, 2008

I have a 12yr old son and had a miscarriage in Feb. Dx with Graves disease at age 17-now 31(switch between hypo/hyperthyroidism after thyroidectomy at age 17). TSH results last wk. were 12 (on synthroid .112mg). Increased to .2mg on 7/30, but told to finish rest of .112mg have left-am taking 2 pills of .112mg daily now until Wednesday when new RX is filled. Found out that levels have to be between 1-2 to conceive and maintain a pregnancy. Have been TTC since miscarriage-thought July would have good chance according to BBT chart. My cycles are reg. 26 days since Feb. from 28 days lasting only 2 days. My BBT chart says I have a luteal phase of 10days with ovulation on day 15. Someone told me to check with your site to make sure of this, because this may not be enough time for implantation to take place. Please let me know my luteal phase, and how long it will take for my TSH levels to get down within normal range (0.3-5.50), so that I may be able to conceive this month or Sept.(my period was July 5th-6, and July30th-31st). I know that I have been ovulating by CM signs-my doc does not want to refer me out unless I have another misscarriage. Seems to think there is not a prob. with me getting pregn. or having another misscarriage unless it happens again. [also on topamax 200mg daily for migraines, but stop it 3 days ago] Could the topamax have an affect on TTC as well too?

Welcome!

Neither topomax or synthroid should have much of an effect on pregnancy (not wise to take topomax once pregnant)

One, however, should not ttc with a thyroid level that isn't well controlled as this can lead to many problems with the pregnancy, both maternal and fetal, along with it being a little more difficult to monitor thyroid levels during the first trimester...

It usually takes about 6wks after changing the thyroid dose to determine whether you're controlled or if another change is required..

Hang in there, better to wait to have a helthy pregnancy than to later on regret hurrying and wind up with problems

Thank you. I go back to doctor in 6 wks on Sept. 10th and will have my levels rechecked and will discuss getting pregnant with my family doc. Hopefully my levels are right where they should be by then. It's good to know that I can still take my topamax until I get pregnant. I do know that my neurologist said I would need to be switched to something else once pregnant too, but didn't know if it I should stop taking it now because of miscarriage.
