Thyroid issues

August 19, 2008

My OBGYN has suggested we take this month off from trying to conceive as my TSH level came back at 19. Is this a dangerous level for a pregnancy. I am awaiting the results of a more recent TSH test, hopefully later today. My dr unfortunately contacted me after I had begun chlomid for this month, so should I assume that this is a wasted month.

You should put off attempting pregnancy until your evaluation is completed. TSH is a screening test for thyroid conditions, which if abnormal would have to be follwed up by more testing. If it is found that you have hypothyroidism, you will need thyroid replacement. Hypothyroidism is a cause of ovualtory dysfunction, so it is possible that once thyroid condition is corrected, you could get pregnant on your own.

best of luck...

Thanks dr. I failed to give you some information. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and have been on synthroid 50mcg for almost 6 months now. Apparently my dr and ob were not monitoring me as well as they should have been and my tsh count is still way off. I will wait to hear about the updated tsh, but it appears that this month is a bust.

Can you please let me know what tsh level is acceptable.
