Thyroid function and TTC

March 16, 2008

Ok, very frustrated with my thyroid right now. I have been tested frequently in the past year for TSH levels. When I was pregnant the last time (identical twins lost at 22 weeks gestation) I was diagnosed with grave's disease. Currently, my TSH levels are at 4.79 and they tell me that they should be at 3.5 for fertility.

SInce I have Grave's, the fertility clinic and my perinatologist do not want to touch the thyroid levels to try to bring them to a good level, incase they send my in hyper again. But they tell me, It will take you maybe longer to get pregnant, but just keep trying.

So... all this to ask... How much do you think this will affect me getting pregnant AND is there anything I should ask for them to do/check? I am starting to get very upset by all of this and would like to rectify it as soon as possible. Thanks so much!

OH yes... and I am on NO medication and never have been for they thyroid problems.

Since your thyroid levels are still in the normal range, it really won't take longer to get pregnant or affect your ability to get pregnant...

Thank you! I just keep wondering why everyone (the Endo, peri, and RE) keept telling me it will affect it! Plus everything I read says that it would be a factor in taking longer to get pregnant.

Hi Jdkamp,

First of all I would like to say that I am very sorry for you loss and I wish you loads of BFP and Sticky Dust in the future.

I was diagnosed with a severely underactive thyroid in my early 20's. I would get my period almost every 14 days and it would be very heavy. My doctor put me on Birth Control, Fertility Meds and Thyroid medications to get me back on track because they said it would cause major fertility issues down the line.

Fast forward 12 years and we are trying to start a family. I am still on the thryoid medication and I get it checked every 3 - 6 months. My thyroid has recently turned a little on the hyper side but my doctor assured me that as long as I was ovulating and having normal cycles that I should be able to get pregnant without any problems.

My doctor ran day 3 FSH test and day 21 progesteron test to make sure that I was ovulating. I also temp and do the OPK strips just to make sure that I am ovulating. I did get preggo back in Nov. but had an early MC. I have a second doctor who prescribed clomid for me just to help me out because of my age and I got a BFP last week and just hoping that it sticks around.
