Question for Dr. Q: Ovulating without... »

thyroid and pregnancy

I have been on Synthroid for years. My thyroid went crazy after my son four years ago. I have been taking synthroid. They just informed me that they need to raise it again to 175mcg. Could my hypothyroid have anything to do with me having a hard time getting pregnant? I got pregnant with an IUI with my son the first time at 29. Now I'm going into my forth cycle at 34. My thyroid was fine until after I had my son. I am ovulating though. So, how could my thyroid be affecting me becoming pregnant if at all? Thank you. ALli

Hi alli99,

Severe hypothyroidism can keep you from ovulating and thus getting pregnant, whereas mild hypothyroidism may simply make it a little harder if anything to get you pregnant (due to possible elevated TRH levels stimulating Prolactin secretion)...Let's get your thyroid under control and we'll help you get there...

I am starting on 175mcg tomorrow. I have been on synthroid for years. My TRH was 8.8. I was on 150mcg. How long before synthroid is in your system? Is it like prozac and those drugs that take weeks? I starte the clomid last night. Days 3-7. Then, I will be starting the 175mcg of synthroid tomorrow. Do you think these drugs will make a difference? I just wanted to get your opinion. What about pain medicine. I have tohave a root canal tomorrow. Can I take percocet after for the pain? Or should I skip it and just take advil. Thanks Alli99
