The function of tubes

March 08, 2008

Dr. Q you mentioned in a last post that a tube may be open but pregnancy depends on how well its functioning. Can you please explain? I thought if it was open it was functioning.

not all tubes that are open are functioning, as the inside lining of the tube may be "scarred" up, making one high risk for an ectopic...you only suspect these in people with previous Chlamydia exposure or endometriosis...sometimes the tube will contain some water inside (hydrosalpinx) which is a big tip-off that the tube isn't working...

Would the hsg that I had done have revealed that there is some water inside the tube?

Yes, an HSG is usually very good in revealing a hydrosalpinx
