The Ectoptic didn't burst..how could this happen??

Ya'll are not going to believe this. I'm still shocked while I'm writing this:

I went for my post surgical appt for my LAP and guess what I was told? The doctor started the conversation off by saying "you are one lucky woman" Of course I was wondering why I was so lucky. She goes on to tell me that they found an ectoptic pregnany in my tube after examining the tube from my recent LAP Surgery. For those of you who may not know..my husband has no sperm, therefore, it was impossible for this to be a "recent pregnancy". Also, for those of you who don't know, I decided to go to another Fertility Clinic after my 5th IUI cycle since I sincerely felt that they (my old clinic) just didn't care about my fertility. There is no doubt that this tubal pregnancy was a result from the 3rd IUI Cycle that I had where my HCG levels started off slowly, and only got to around 12,000 before decreasing. They were able to see a sac in my uterus, but determined it was a blighted ovum because there was not fetus or sac. I am know learning that it was possibly a "PSEDUO SAC" which is a fake sac that some ectoptic pregnancies can produce. On May 20th of this year (my IUI was on March 21, 09) I had severe..and I mean severe pain in my left and only tube at that time, it was so severe that I ended up in the ER..they checked me via ultrasound and determined that it may be one of my fibroids "flaring" up which didn't make sense to me since they had not hurt like that in the past. They also ruled out an ectoptic, and indicated that an ectoptic would have burst by now. My RE at the time caught wind that I went to the ER with pain on my left side, and advised me to come in ASAP to see him so they could do another ultrasound to rule out an ectoptic...they found nothing. So of course, at this point, I already knew that I was miscarrying since my beta levels had already started to drop. We had our 4th and 5th IUI cyles about 2 months after that and both were BFN's. Today, I found out the reason those particular cycles were BFN's..IT'S BECAUSE MY DARN TUBE WAS BLOCKED AS A RESULT OF AN ECTOPTIC. My new RE told me that the HSG report I did in December 2008 before starting my IUI's in Jan of this year showed a "free spill" of the tube which is not something you will get with an ectoptic since your tube is automatically blocked with an ectoptic. I feel very blessed but yet ticked off at the same time. How could I go around with an ectoptic from March to October and NO ONE notice it?? I am indeed lucky that my tube did not burst, and cause my death due to internal bleeding. Another interesting thing is that my HCG levels went down to 0 although I had an ectoptic, the doctor indicated that they have never seen that before. Plus, the new RE did an HCG before my LAP since it is protocl beforing performing surgery and it too was negative (additional evidence that this was not a recent pregnancy). I just hate that we wasted money on are 4th and 5th IUI Cycles. I'm thinking about calling the Office Manager of the Old RE's office and asking for a refund for those cycles. One of the reasons why is because they were responsible for my care, and most importantly, they were the FIRST people to indicate to me that I may have a tubal because my hcG LEVELS were slow rising...but they just dropped the darn ball.

Thanks Jill, I'm still rather shocked by it. I was just doing a search on the internet, and I was not able to find any cases similar to mine where the HCG dropped down to 0 although there was still a tubal pregnancy present.

I meant to say in my post that "the doctor determined it to be a blighted ovum since there was no yolk sac or fetus"

Diva...I think the reason the HCG was zero and nothing was detected by U/s is that Yes you had a tubal, BUT..what they recently found and i assume removed from your tube was probably tissues from the Ectopic...thankfully they werent cells that were alive, otherwise they wouldve continued to grow...With my Ectopic my doctors warned me of this possibly happening, which is one of the major reasons your a high risk of another Ectopic, becuz some tissues can be left behind, blocking that tube, therefore repeating another Ectopic in that tube....If the Ectopic they found in you was dead cells then u woldnt have been at risk of tube bursting...:-) So either way thank god they found this...now they can clear that tube, and i pray give you a higher chance of getting Pregnant again :-)

Karen, the left tube was all I had left. I have no choice but to do IVF now. The reason my new RE wanted to remove it was not because of a suspected ectoptic but because the HSG report done in Dec 2008 showed an inflammation of the tube (which the previous RE never told me about until later in my IUI Cycles, but indicated that it was no big deal since there was a 'free spill" of the tube) and she felt it may effect my IVF cycle if the tube filled with fluid and either washed the implanted embryos out or poisioned them. The ectoptic was a shock to the new RE as well, and she did not mention that it was just tissues removed. Sorry to sound like a dumb dumb, but how could I have ectoptic tissue if I did not have an ectoptic in the past?

Ohh..Karen, I just re read what you wrote, and I assume (please correct me if I'm wrong) that you are under the impression that I had an ectoptic in the past, and there was tissue left behind...is that accurate?

Prolly from ur last IUI cycle hun. Yea i was told some tissues can be left behind but no1 would ever know unless the tissues were alive, therfore making HCG rise...but since urs was zero means they were just dead cells, prolly a mix of scar tissues...For all i know my tube that my Ectopic was in could have tissues left in it still, and my Ectopic was from August 2008...i have noticed since that when i got my period or ovulated i got more intense pains in that side and 2 cycles one was Feb. and the other was March where i had some extreme pains i almost went to ER.....But yes its possible to still have tissue remaining for long time...Thats what my doc told me anyways...Supposedly the MTX injection i got was a more safer way to treat the Ectopic..to reduce chances of tissue damages, and the surgery was more risk of damages...You ARE lucky though, that your Ectopic seemed to resolved itself, which is very very very rare..it usually takes meds or surgery to stop it....But i think since ur HCG was zero you werent in any danger but its good they found it, so they can clear it out and have that tube provide a clear passage way now :-)

opps missed ur other post....Yes hun u must have had a Ectopic if it was Ectopic tissue removed. Thing with Ectopics ,since they arent growing in the right spots that provides a embryo good nutrients...they dont grow right, most the times a Ectopic pregnancy wont even 'look' like a baby growing...alot of times a baby dont grow at all, but dies early on be4 known of it being Ectopic, its the placenta cells that continue to grow and make HCG rise...thats why when they re found they cant transfer the pregnancy to the uterus...cuz it grows all out of formation...its very hard to explain...Once those cells are dead our bodies absorb most the pregnancy....but sometimes extra tissue remains and just sits there and gets in the way..and can be irritating at that time of the month
