Starting Metformin

Hi all. I've been trying since last year to get pregnant. I tried Provera twice and the first time i only got in one month. The second time i tried it, i got it for two months. But once again, my periods have stop coming. About two months ago i went to a family doctor because i hadn't been feeling well and he diagnosed me with Diabetes. big reality check for me! Anyhow, I went back to my gynecologist and i had an ultrasound done, blood checked and the whole works. She said my hormone levels are good, No cysts of any type, my ultrasound came out great and I have slight diabetes. so she said I have POS.
She has prescribed Glucophage for me which is Metformin. I've been reading up on it, and it seems that the side effects are bad. She told me to start with 3 500mg a day and if i got sick, then i should go to 2 a day. Any suggestions on how i should start? Also, what are my chances in getting pregnant?? She prescrived me for four months. Is that long enough to know if it's going to work? Sorry so long!
