Starting Follistim tomorrow--higher success rate than Clomid?

July 19, 2007

I begin follistim in the morning. Can you tell me anything to expect...are there any side effects? I'd just like another opinion. My RE has been very good, but I was just curious what someone else would say about the drug. Is it true that my chances are higher with these injections? Clomid just caused me to be chasing my tail...the largest my follicles ever got was 1.9cm and my uterine lining was always way to thin too. I was told that this should do the trick, and to even be prepared for twins. Which is pretty exciting in our eyes.

By far and away follistim will more than double your pregnancy rate than with clomid and have much fewer side effects. Not only that, it should not adversely affect your uterine lining and yep, around a third of all pregnancies wind up being twins or more

Follistim used to be commonly known as "Folli-sting", but since they wend to their now recombinant form (which is i'm sure what you have), that stinging is almost gone. Most people just breaze through with almost no side effects. I have known patients get this quick "jittery" rapid pulse sensation for about an hour, but pretty much that's as much as I've heard.

Good luck and am hopeful this is all you'll need to get you pregnant

Wow...thanks so much for your response. I'm really excited. And the shot was a piece of cake. The hardest part was just getting over it and actually DOING it. Then i was like, "well what was i afraid of?". Makes me wish i would have tossed my clomid out the window and taken my money straight to this drug. I'm quite suprised at how rapidly things progress with follistim vs clomid. The doc already wants to do an ultrasound on Wednesday! I remember with clomid, it was about a week after my last pill. From your experience, how soon could I be using my ovulation shot? I just found out that my husband may be out of town overnight Aug 1-2. I want to make sure he's around for the crucial times... Do you think ovulation will be passed by this point (if they are doing my ultrasounds next week)? The nurse at my RE's office seemed to think so. Gosh i hope that he's not out of town at the wrong time.

Don't worry, there's a couple of options that are available to you in the event your husband is out of town...

1. Since you're seeing an RE, I'm sure they have the capability of freezing his sperm if you know he's not going to be around, and labs can do this anytime. That way, you're pretty much guaranteed to have sperm available for an IUI.

2. The other option you have, and maybe less expensive is that if you husband is only out of town for a day or two and your follicle has just reach size for hCG trigger, you can delay the ovulation by getting an antagonist shot for a day or two, then trigger ovulation when you know he's around.

You see, by planning things correctly, we can work around many different scenarios
