Sperm morphology and chromosonal abnormalities

October 06, 2008

My husband has 1% normal sperm. We do not know the cause of this, but about 10 years ago he was on very high dose interferon for a year.

We never expected to get pregnant on our own, but still wanted to try, so I take my BBT daily and on our 4th month trying (Sept.) I got my first positive and it was confirmed by a blood test at the Drs. The hormones were low though...23. I started bleeding and having heavy cramps yesterday. I believe it was a chemical pregnancy and the Dr will confirm it tomorrow. Could my husbands sperm issues be causing this? Will this happen continuously? Is abnormal morphology linked with chromosonal issues or DNA being messed up in the sperm?

No, morphology is only the the shape of the sperm...the "Outisde packaging" so to speak. What is inside has nothing to do with the shape. Now, he may have sperm that have chromosonal issues or DNA issues but I believe you would need furthur testing to prove that. But the morphology itself has nothing to do with the contents inside the sperm = ) This is what my doc told me.

My DH also has 1% morphology (but really high counts and motility) and we had a chemical about 3 weeks ago after 12 months of trying. Our doc is not worried about his morph %.

I agree and have learned the same from the research I did today. I am concerned though...because he has been on high dose interferon and had some other immuno-therapy treatments. My husband also has high counts and good motility! We sound pretty similar. I am hoping this is just a fluke and will never happen again, but we are still going to get the DNA fragmentation test mainly because of his medical history.

How did you handle your chemical pregnancy? We are doing as well as can be expected. We really thought it was a miracle and meant to be...

Well, it was painful and I never want to go through it again but at the same time we were thinking "After 12 months we finally got something!" Which means it will happen again and now we just gotta get it to stick. = ) My period was only 2 days later than it should have been...had I not gotten the positive test I would have never know thats what it was.

Hopefully, neither of us will have to wait much longer! = )

My period was about 7-8 days late. I tested when I was 4-5 days late. I really did not think I was pregnant. I thought it was the vitamin B6 extending my luteal phase, but I tested anyway and was pleasantly surprised. I stopped taking the vitamin B6 after I got the positive because I was afraid the excess vitamin could harm the fetus...now that is another possible reason to add to my list. I am not blaming myself or anything. I would never do anything intentional, but it is frustrating.

Worst part was that I went through the bleeding all alone on a train for 8 hours. I feel better now being at home with my husband and dog. We are meeting with our fertility specialist on Monday and I am working on a list of questions. If you have any suggestions for things I could ask please let me know. I always end up coming away with a question I wish I had asked.
