Should iChange Doc in the midlle of treatment?

January 02, 2008

Hello Dr.Q and Ladies,

i have a difficult decision to make and i would like your opinion.I've been with my doc for 3 months now, i am on my second round of clomid, i did 50mg, now 100mg. But the thing is, i really don't connect with him. He's not doing any type ultra sound or nothing to see if i am ovulating. He just said go home take clomid on day 5cd to 9cd, track your temp, and come here when you got your period. So, i did that, but clomid made me very dry, even hurt my DH. then i told him that, i asked if my CM was not "friendly" to the sperms, and he said there is not such a thing, that i just need to use lubricant next time, he also looked on my temp chart and said that i did not ovulate on this cycle, just based on the chart. when i asked for further questions, he just said that i should keep taking the clomid. I really want to change doc, but do you think that would a problem to stop the treatment in the midlle and see another doc, or i should wait for the third round on clomid, and then change doc? please i'll really apreciate if you could help me with your opinions, because i just moved to a new state where i don't know anybody, or a good doc for that matter.

Happy New Year for you all...

Lots of BABY DUST TO YOU ALL THIS YEAR.

thanks,

andreia.

Hello Andreia, It is very important for one to trust his/her Dr. If the trust is gone, no matter what the Dr does, the element of doubt will always linger in ones mind.

Most Dr's usually try Clomid for atleast 3 cycles to determine if it is actually working or not. That could probably be why he is taking his time without jumping into any conclusions.

You havent mentioned if you have gotten blood tests done, probably they look good enough for him to not warrant an Ultrasound. From what I read in these sites, Ultrasounds are not routinely done while on Clomid. you need to be under more aggressive treatments to get that done.

I would strongly suggest you start taking OPKs to find out if you are ovulating. That would for sure tell you if you Od or not. BBTs only confirm ovulation and can be influenced by many external factors and are not reliable.

I would ask the reception desk about the Dr's credentials. Its ok to ask and they will tell. If you are still uncomfortable, then I would ask friends for reference (which is not possible in your case), or go to a good hospital that is attached to a medical school. You will find someone to help you out. My Dr before putting me on Clomid gave me 6 months before attempting an IUI(I was already preggo and didnt know then).I asked about unfriendly CM and she said the Post Coital test can be done later. Infact, didnt even get a HSG done to check tubes.

If you did have abnormal blood tests (harmone), then its time to visit an RE and find one the same way I mentioned above..

I hope you do get preggo soon and wish you good luck and a happy new year

Hey Andreia,

I am so sorry, and I can totally relate. You should check out the first post I made on FertilityTies, back in September. I sounded a lot like you do now.

My doctor was a doof, too, and I didn't connect with him in the least. His worst offense, as far as I was concerned, was his unveiling of his grand plan for me, which was to put me on Clomid for 18 months (6 at 50mg, 6 at 100 mg, and 6 at 150mg). Since everything I read suggested that Clomid pretty much works or it doesn't within 6 months AND that women who go on the drug for longer than a year potentially have a higher risk of ovarian cancer, well, I knew I was done.

I took the prescription he gave me for the 50mg and came up with a plan. I would take the drug days 3-7 for one month. If I failed, I'd continue on the second month, but call for an appointment with a new doctor. This way, I was able to cover my bases.

I was very lucky and ended up getting pregnant my first month with Clomid (maybe my doctor really did know what he was talking about...nah), and got a recommendation from my general practitioner for a new OB/GYN. She sent me to a woman who I love. She took my history on the first appointment, and asked me all of the questions I wish my other doctor had. When I told her I had a 20 day cycle she looked at me and said, "Wow, women with 20 day cycles tend to have a hard time getting pregnant". THANK YOU. My other doctor just said, "Well, you'll just have to have sex more".

Point being, get what you want from this doctor to tide you over while you make an appointment with another one. You'll be much happier.

I absolutely hated my first RE. He had a horrible bedside manner. I never connected with him, so I switched in the middle of my cycle. It was indeed the best thing I have ever done. My new RE is absolutely wonderful. She is very understanding.
