Short umbilical cord

September 05, 2008

What could be the cause of this? I miscarried at 18 weeks, and asside from chromosomal abnormalities in chromosome 18, the dr mentioned that the baby was very small and has a short umbilical cord. What does this mean, and why would this happen?

Trisomy 18 is a lethal abnormality. The fact that the umbilical cord was short is of no consequence. Hopefully this was just a spontaneous occurrence. I would try again and if you become pregnant, have the first trimester testing which consists of BHCG PAPP A and a nuchal translucency ultrasound to detect for this early.

Thank you for your answer Dr. Littman, I'll be sure to request those from my dr, as soon as I get a BFP.
