Septate Uterus and High Prolactin

June 16, 2008

Hello,

My husband and I have been TTC for 18 cycles now with no luck. I have recently been told I have a Septate Uterus as well as a slightly high prolactin level. This month, I produced an egg without drugs and we timed intercourse just right. No pregnancy. should we elect to have surgery to fix the septate uterus, or just try meds for the prolactin level for a few months first. I am getting very frustrated since we have been trying for so long. Could I be getting pregnant, but losing the pregnancy each month due to the septate? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Hilary,

It may be adviseable to have surgery to remove the septation and control your prolactin level with medications to give you a good chance at getting pregnant..

Hi Hilary,

I was also having the same problem (septate uterus)..we were being ttc for 20 months, with no luck..My doc advised for the surgery n its been completly recovered now...N now i ve started as a fresh ttc'er!

My doc said, if it is nt recovered, it may cause danger for the fetus while it grows!..

good luck!

hey ladies i know this post is very old but I also was told I may have a sub septate uterus, I am very worried and concerned and have a TON of questions about this. I also am ttc, 3 years now. Would either of you like to tell me your story and how your septate uterus played a roll in your TTC?

November 07, 2008

Hello Jennifer,

Sorry I haven't been back to post. I elected to have surgery in Sepetmber to fix my septum. At the same time, my doc did a laproscopy and discovered Endormetriosis-Level 2. No wonder I wasn't getting pregnant!!! All was cleared up! Surgery was not bad and recovery was fairly easy too. This is my first cycle TTC since surgery and I am actually headed in for IUI in a few hours! Two folicles ready on the right, so I am hopeful that now my uterus is fixed, and ready to carry a pregnancy. I am happy to share more of my story if you'd like to hear more. Wish me luck today!

November 07, 2008

GOOD LUCK =) Im glad to hear you are able to ttc again only 2 months after your surgery!!

What made your Dr do a laproscopy? Should I ask for that too, is it associated with a septate uterus at all? Were you on clomid before? How long had you been ttc??

November 07, 2008

Hello Jennifer,

I am post IUI now and chillin' on the couch! All went well, so now it's that horrible 2ww!!! It kills me every month!

I only had to wait 1 natural cycle after surgery to start ttc! This is only day 11 of my cycle, so kind of early, but I had an ultrasound yesterday and have 2 follicles that were mature and ready, so IUI today!

I live in one of the states with NO fertility clinic! I have a great doc, but had to travel for such an extensive surgery. Since I was traveling, the doctor who was doing the surgery, decided to do botht he laproscope and the resection at the same time since I would be under sedation.

I have a family history of Endo, but have never had any symptoms(besides the infertility) and have always been told, I "probably" didn't have Endo. I am SO glad that this doctor did both at the same time. For only a Septate, you shouldn't need both, but I think it can't hurt to check the outside of your uterus.

I was on Clomid 2x beofre, once for 2 months with regualr intercourse and another time for 2 months with IUI and then the surgery.

I have been TTC for almost 3 years. I will send you a message soon!

hi jennifer,

sorry for the late reply...just wanted to share my experience too...we ve been ttc for almost 2 yrs...i ve been given 7 rounds of clomid n 1 round of femera..bt there was no pos result..thn my doc suggested for a Lap, just to chk for any other problem...thn i had my Lap done on may, where she found out tht i d septum in my uterus (she rectified it) , n she also did an ovarian drilling to enhance my chances...it was an easy recovery as hilary said.

thn the very next month , she asked me to continue trying with femera..n thn i found out to be pregnant on july!!..nw i am 20 weeks preggy n i feel really blessed!

good luck to both of u!!!

hi c&d,

Not yet found!...its gonna b a surprise!

November 13, 2008

PPP wow what a great story! Can you tell me what a Lap is? The full term for it just in case I have to ask my Dr to do the same thing. Did you have your OBGYN do it, or were you seeing a RE??

I was told that my uterus just has a "dip" in the top, and they dont know if the actual uterus itself is dip shaped or if theres a septum in the middle thats dipped. So I have a SIS next in a week, they will inject Saline into my uterus and get a better look at it and we will go from there. The Dr said there is a small chance that the uterus problem is whats causing my infertility but he highly doubts it since I have yet to ovulate (right now we are totally banking on the fact that once I ovulate for a few cycles it will happen)

Still gonna get the septum taken care of. My Dr said it didnt look too bad (he saw it during my HSG also) and he said if its actually shaped like that theres nothing they can do and it should be just fine (ill just have a small dip in the top of my uterus only complications it can cause is I might have to do a C section someday) but if its a septate dip inside the uterus walls then they will just go in an snip it out he said. So either way I'm not too worried about it.

=) I love your success story it gives me hope!!

Thx Jennifer!

Lap is "Laproscopy"..my obgyn did it for me..i didnt c any RE.i had a HSG before, bt there was no problem found!!.Actually my gyn did nt find my septum in advance...she was planning to do an ovarian drilling n some normal check ups during the surgery..bt as she saw inside she found out the septum n resected it...she, indeed told us tht it was just a small dip (as u said) on the top of the uterus...i think ovarian drilling + septum resection made it happen!..(with femera, ofcourse)

i think u ve to discuss with ur doc abt this (+ ovarian drilling if needed)...Hope to c ur BFP soon..keeping fingers crossed for u, hun!

I have never heard of ovarian drilling? What is taht?

Thanks for sharing your success story PPP! I am pretty sure the septum has been a BIG factor in why I haven't fallen pregnant yet. My surgeon told me that mine was 1/3 of the way down my uterus. That could def prevent implantation. I am CD 18 now and in the 2ww! Killing me....

During a laparoscopy, an electrosurgery needle is used to burn 10-12 small holes into each ovary. This procedure may help reduce androgen levels and restore cycles in women with polycystic ovaries.

This is what i found out searching the web!..it says it also enhances ovulation!..i don think its neccessary to be done for all people having pcos!

Just a week to go, hilary!..n i am sure ur goin to have ur BFP!..good luck!

November 15, 2008

wow, we should start our own little "girls with septums" group! I have one as well & had my surgery in August. My RE discovered that I had Asherman's Syndrome (severe scarring of the uterus) on my HSG & the confirmed the scarring during an office hyteroscopy. She then did an operative hysteroscopy & after she resected the scar tissue, found a septum that came 1/2 down my uterus! In the past I haven't had any trouble getting pregnant, but I have had 3 m/c's & an ectopic. It made me feel so much better that she was able to figure out why I kept losing pregnancies & she was able to fix both things fairly easily & the recovery was not bad at all! We are just trying to get my cycles back on track now & are hoping to do an IUI next cycle! Baby Dust to everyone!

Take Care!

Megan,

That septum was def. your issue. How great that it was found and fixed! I had surgery Sept 26th and am now in the 2ww after IUI iwth 50mg Clomid. I am excited to see what happens this month. We have been trying now for almost 3 years...

Tuesday at 08:08AM

Hey ladies. I had to cancel my SIS on Thursday because when I went for my follicle screening I had 3 mature follicles, 2 in my right ovary 1 in my left. They all were very close to the right size, my Dr said I should ovulate very soon so he doesnt want me to do the SIS, also my lining of my uterus was good, 11.5 mm and he said an SIS may disturb that and we shouldnt take any chances, he said it should be done RIGHT after my period so its being put on hold right now.

My OBGYN also said that my septum most likely isnt much to worry about and if I do get pregnant it will be fine. He didnt say anything about the fact that if it attatches to the septum and not the uterus wall that I will miscarry... guess he thought I didnt need to know that. Funny how Drs think we are stupid and only choose to tell us what they think we need to know... or maybe he just didnt think about that who knows?

Overall tho I'm not too worried about it, if I get pregnant then GREAT, if not then we will get that septum looked at closer. They still arent sure if its just a small septum dip in the top of the uterus or if my uterus is just shaped funny itself and has a dip in it. IF its just he uterus and there is no septum then theres nothing they can do... SO I dont know which to hope for =) haha.

I've seen 2 OBGYNs about my "septate uterus" or "dipped shaped uters" (whichever it is) and neither seemed too concerned. They both said its OK to get pregnant reguardless. So I am hopeful.

Hilary can't wait to hear about your BFP =)

Megan how are you?! I appreciate any info you guys have on any of this. Did I tell you guys about DH's sperm yet? We'll save that for later cuz this post is already LONG lol

If you do get pregnant, your septum might not be a problem at all. I think the most important thing is that they now have you ovulating. That's a BIG hurdle! YEAH! Now you can see if this is "your month"! I wish you nothing but BB Dust.

I will test for the first time tonight. I am very nervous and anxious.

Tuesday at 05:41PM

Don't be nervous! Even if its neg. U still have like 4 more days of testing so don't give up! Shelly tested one day and it was neg then the very next day it was positive! And she did an IUI also. I know they say with IUI the true result of the test may take a lil longer, so as long as AF doesn't show u r still in the game and even tho it hurts and its scary to put ur heart on ur sleeve again and think positive when it mite not be, think that way anyway. We are all here for u and u have to give it all up to God and try not to let ur fears control u. If its meant for u to be pregnant this month then u will be :) hang in there. It will be ok I promise

I just know ur time is coming I pray it starts w/ a positive test tonight!!!

Wednesday at 01:15AM

Hey Jen-

I am doing ok...well I guess not really, things pretty much suck right now. So, I finally got my period on Saturday & I was all excited cause that meant I got to start my new cycle with my IUI & injectables. They did a baseline US today & I have a huge cyst left over from last cycle so it is pretty much a bust. They're giving me 2 more days to see if it ruptures, but i think the chances are slim. Thanks for asking, sorry to be such a downer but I just had a terrible day. I am glad things seem to be working out for you. I wouldn't worry too much about the septum cause the chance of a pregnancy implanting onto the septum are very VERY slim because usually there is not enough normal endometrium there. Good luck!

Wednesday at 09:27AM

Thanks Megan =)

I feel so bad because everyone else seems to be having a rough couple of days lately and I'm actually having a great couple of days, usually I'm the one with all the bad news.... I guess thats how it goes tho we can't all have good days, thats why we are here for eachother.

I pray that your cyst goes away and that you can start your next cycle. Stay positive everything happens for a reason I know I hated hearing that when my cycles were a bust too... but somewhere deep inside I believe it.

Sending you loads of sympathy I'm here if you need to vent.. that goes for ALL YOU LADIES =)

Thursday at 01:17AM

Tested negative last night. I am really bummed and so is DH. Plan now is to wait for good ol' AF and if she doesn't come by Saturday, I'll retest. We are just bummed becuase we were VERY hopeful with the being a new cycle with a new uterus that this would be IT!!!! I am so sick and tired of waiting for this to happen! I have been a rut now for almost 3 year and I am OVER IT!!! URGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Thursday at 01:18AM

sorry for the typo-s, emotions are getting the best of me! LOL

Thursday at 06:44AM

Hil, I feel your pain... I am so sorry. You never know tho 12 dpo is kind of early to test after IUI. Keep your faith and trust in the fact that if this isnt your month then your time is coming soon. I look at each - month as the fact that I'm one month closer to that BFP =) Hang in there We are all here for you!!
