Semen Analysis

September 04, 2007

Hi Dr. Q,

My husband had a semen analysis and now we are trying to understand the results. Please help us......Densisty 97x106, Total Count 271.6x105 (I think..can't read if it is 105 or 106), %Motility 64%, %Moving Forward 75%, Normal Morphology 8% and %Abnormal 92%. What does all of this mean? After %Abnormal they give the reason a tapered heads. The doctor said the reason for this may be because he had an undescended testicle and it wasn't fixed until he was in 4th grade (9-10yrs old). What do we do now? Are we facing big problems? Thank you!

Also wanted to include that the morphology was on the Kruegar scale.

Perfect,

Knowing the morphology is on the Kruger scale, it's pretty reassuring that 8% is going to be ok (it doesn't have to be >12%for this to be normal), but when it's at or below 4%, then you may be limited to IVF + ICSI for conception purposes. For all intensive purposes, would go ahead and consider this a normal semen analysis result, and would proceed with any treatment you so desire. Good luck, let us know what your thoughts are, and please keep us posted

Thank you Dr. Q. Is there any way to improve the morphology of the sperm?

Hi Fran,

Very little can be done to improve morphology, but consideration to purchasing some supplements that contain L-Carnitine and antioxidants for ROS can help the sperm out a bit, and some of these products include Fertile1, Proxeed, FertilityBlend etc..
