safety and effectiveness of Evening primrose oil to help ripen cervix
June 25, 2008
Dr Q. - I had my 37 week appointment today and found out that my cervix is still quite hard. My midwife said she's like it to soften up and instructed me and DH to have "lots of sex" - although I am willing to try this method, I am concerned that we arent going to be able to do it enough for it to matter. I have read online that evening primrose oil can be taken orally or inserted vaginally and is said to help ripen the cervix...is this true? And is it safe?
Also, would having sex even once help with ripening the cervix, or does it need to be on a more regular basis??

Hi erin! I know evening promrose (I have taken it for more ewcm) can make your cervix contract that that woman ttc need to stop taking when they ovulate. Now I know I'm not a dr but I have read some dr's give it the preggo woman near 40 and plus to help the cervix out. But like all other meds I would talk to your dr about that.
One can never know sweetie...the day that I delivered my bestfriend lost her mucus plug in the morning and called me at 2:30am the following morning saying she was on the way to the hospital with contractions 7 min apart. She delivered at 5:28am in the same exact room that I did. It was a quick one..........take care and don't get discouraged yet! Hugs to you my sweet!
thanks Fran. That is cool that you guys delivered in the same room! My SIL had her 37 week appt and had no progress, 2 days later she gave birth to my nephew...so I know anything is possible. I was just hoping there would have been some indication that we were moving in the right direction!
Thanks Angel...I hope she is lovely like her Daddy...mommy is a bit hard to take sometimes! :)

Not an uncommon situation to have a "rock hard" cervix at 37wks, especially if your first baby...a very common scenarion and shouldn't provoke any stress over this
Sex, semen in particular because of its prostaglandins may help a little at best, Evening Primrose would be less effective than semen, but you may not get any medical help to help ripen the cervix until about 40wks and thereafter

Thanks Dr. Q, think I will just stick to sex and let nature take its course. Although I am anxious to deliver, I am certainly not trying to rush things before they are ready. I was mostly worried that it wasnt normal to still have a hard cervix this far into the game, thanks for your reassurance about that, and your honest input about the evening primrose. :)
