SA... Freaking out big time... please help

October 06, 2008

Hi there...

DH had a SA done two weeks ago and I just called in for the results. Spoke to the secretary as the Dr is unavailable... at first she said that she needed to speak to the DR before giving me the results as she she doesn't know how to read them, which is fine, she said she'd call later. But then she looked at them again and said that she thinks that they do not look normal, and again said she needs to speak to the Dr.

WHY did she have to say that? I know that she is just the secretary and she is not trained, but why couldn't she have just kept quiet? I am now freaking out big time. I know nothing about male factor at all. Can anyone tell me what can be done for a man if there are male issues? DH is 29, doesn't smoke, isn't overweight and rarely drinks alcohol. What do you think the problem could be?

I am just so upset to think that we may have spent 6 months trying and wasted 3 rounds of Clomid (this being our 3rd, I am 4DPO), and that we may have this to deal with as well as the ten week cycles and PCOS. Now I am just waiting for the phone to ring.

I know I should not panic about this, and that it is not bad news yet, but I really am freaking out. Can anyone shed light on what can be done if there is a male factor?

Hi Boo,

I am sorry that you are going through this. . that stupid woman. . . what was she thinking!!!

Myself and dh have gone through the same thing. We have a 6 yr old and have been trying for number 2 for 19 cycles now. I had a bad birth with my son so assumed it was me but. . . dh sa results came back bad. . our only hope is ivf with icsi but as I said dh results were that bad that nothing can be done apart form that.

I don't want to upset you any more than you are already but what I am trying to say is that even if the results are super bad they can do something about it and you can have a baby.

If the results are "off" normal there are supplements you can get that will give dh 's little men a boost so you can conceive naturally!

Good luck and keep me posted.

We have male factor and frankly, I'm surprised your doc was willing to prescribe Clomid for you without checking your hubby at first.

Anyway. Male factor infertility could be any number of things from count, to motility, to volume, to mophology, to preence of white blood cells.

The different conditions are treated differently. So, speculating will only serve to contribute to your anxiety, not relieve it.

If there is male factor infertility, your DH will probably be referred to a urologist, so you can expect that.

And remember, hubby needs to have only 1 good strong swimmer out of millions.... getting your cycles straightened out is much more difficult.

I was suspected of having PCOS 5 years ago and was put on Metformin. No change. Further labs 3 1/2 years ago showed that was misdiagnosis and on proper medication, I ended up with 37 day cycles. 3 cycles later, my daughter was conceived.

At this point, we knew we had a male-factor problem, but were not seeing fertility treatment. Actually, we'd kinda given up the thought that we may conceive on our own. We went to an adoption seminar in November and conceive Mia in December. Bottom line.... it only takes 1 good little swimmer!

Thanks for your replies, Ladies.

After all the stress yesterday, I eventually spoke to the Doctors secretary again, who told me everything was normal with the SA. She made no apology whatsoever for suggesting otherwise and causing me to spend an entire day panicking. Unbelievable, but thank God everything is fine so I can go back to stressing over the 2ww!
