resuming periods after stopping birth control pills

May 02, 2008

My 23-year-old daughter was on birth control pills for several years due to a doctor thinking she might have endometreosis. That diagnosis was never confirmed by a laproscopic surgery. She got off the pill about 9 months ago, but has not gotten her period. The doctor is not concerned and says it can take a while to resume your period after getting off the pill. He did give her a pill on two occasions to start the period (I am assuming it was a hormone). Each time she did get the period, but only for that month. Is her lack of resuming her period due to a low hormone level.

Hi Ellen,

There are several reasons why someone wouldn't get a period...a TSH and Prolactin level should at minimum be drawn to make sure it's normal...PCOS is a big culprit now adays for keeping people from getting a period...

Regardless, every normal reproductive age woman (unless on contraception) should be getting a period either naturally or with meds, such as you mentioned...The history of birth control use has no relevance to her not having periods at this time (at most, maybe a couple of months a period can be delayed)...
