Faye..I wonder if you could use a local clinic as a satelite to do blood work and u/s as my doc said I'd be going in every two days if we do ivf next month. What clinic is this? I'm not far from IL either!

Is it possible to do IVF but have to travel?
I was told of a clinic that is doing a study and offering one free cycle of IVF. Well I qualify for the requirements but the center is in Illinois I live in Michigan which isn't all that far but I didn't know if it was possible to have to travel that far to do the IVF procedure?
I know you have to be around for the retrieval and then again for when the put the embryos back in but how long is the interval in between? short enough to be able to stay at a hotel or something like that or would it be really hard for me to travel back and forth? I would have to go alone or with a friend when DH isn't needed but thats fine with both of us.
I know we have other options first but I figure why waste the time and our money when we can cut out the middle men if they do say we can participate in the study. I'm probably jumping the gun but with their success rate it gives me hope that after a year and half possibly 2 years by the time I would do the study I would actually have a baby.

YEs What kelli said makes a lot of sense.. there is a TON of monitoring going on-during IVF- so I think you will need to find a lab or a local RE that might be willing to help you out..? I dont know- really- thats awesome that you found that- maybe you could make a post for others and tell them all about it- :)

thanks girls, the place said I qualify but they have so many people wanting to do the study they have a back list. First they have to get the ok from their people to allow more people into the study so I'm on a waiting list.
I thought about maybe asking if I can do the monitoring here but I think with a study they would want to be the ones doing all that stuff. I'm totally ok with having to stay there for what I figure to be like 3 weeks or so and DH said it was fine. We would just be away from each other for a while and I would have to find someone to stay with or make sure we have the money for a hotel that long.

would you just be staying in a hotel in Chicago faye? I went and put my info in for the study too and havnt heard anything yet but as you know i am already in a round of IVF so this would be if it didnt take.
I only live 2 hours from Chicago so i dont think i would stay there i would just make the drive a few times a week.

Clinics that cycle out-of-towners have different ways they work. Most will let you have a local clinic monitor for them until a few days before retrieval. You have to be around for retrieval and transfer :-) .
I have done two out-of-town IVF cycles - and gearing up for a third - and as long as the in-town clinic doesn't screw anything up (it can happen), you shouldn't need to be there more than about 8 to 12 days. I know a number of people who have done out-of-town cycles because of unique issues that the local clinics just don't handle that well. (Different clinics tend to have different specializations when you start getting to the really complex IVF cases.)
If you are comparing clinics - the first and most important thing to consider is the embryology lab and embryologists. The RE is important, but if his or her lab is not great, all of his or her work is for naught.
