Question for an Acupuncturist
March 13, 2008
What are your thoughts on this? I think its kinda strange that they say that it could take up to a year for it to work, I could say that if you take Vit B everyday for a year it could help you to get pregnant and most of the ladies taking it would get pregnant, not cuz of the Vit B but cuz the odds are that in a 12 month period you will get pregnant at some time, right?

Most practitioners of Chinese medicine are very inexperienced in the treatment of infertility and generally are very inexperienced in the use of herbal medicine.
To say that one will get pregnant after a year of taking any herbal formula is nothing less than ridiculous.
Fertility is complicated and infertility is even more so.
Anyone treating infertile patients much arrive at a diferential diagnosis based upon several things including an extensive TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) evaluation as well as a review of the Western medical findings. Then, based upon all this data one must first ask oneself as a practitoner if the patient being evaluated is even a candidate for TCM treatment. If so, an exact goal should be presented to the patient, for example: improved hemodynamics to the uterine lining with the desired effect being an increased potential for implantation. How would one even know if one needed to improve blood flow to the lining? By evaluating a transvaginal ultrasound conducted with a color doppler which allowed for the examination of an elevated uterine artery impedence. Or to reduce sperm dna fragmentation in the male. How would one know to treat this? Because the TCM doctor would have requested that his male patient get this test. Then specific acupuncture points and CUSTOMIZED herbal formulae are given to the patient with regular reviews of changes. For example, with the male patient in mind, treatmtment would ensue for 90 days at which point the patient would have another DNA fragmentation assay performed. If improvement is observed, then continued treatment is justified. If no changes are seen, then treatment should cease as it is not showing benefit.
There is no one herbal formula for all patients. I have written thousands of prescriptions and each one is unique and fits exactly the patient as well as the patients pathology.
Chinese medicine is a complete system of healing but its practitoners are, unfortunately frequently lacking in necessary medical skills.
Best wishes.
