But I thought only the best of the best sperm were pulled from washing and good for insemination?
Question about number of sperm needed

Hello doctors:
Everything I've read says that only a small number of sperm from ejaculate actually make it to the egg and/or fallopian tubes, due to a number of factors. If this is true, why is it that having an IUI with less than a million sperm injected DIRECTLY INTO THE UTERUS and much closer to the egg, is unlikely to lead to conception? Why are the pregnancy rates low with that many motile sperm that are essentially getting a head start? I don't understand.
I had an IUI yesterday with 300,000 motile sperm, yet I was told this is unlikely to work. Kindly help me understand why this is.
THANKS.

When there's low numbers of sperm, many times they may also not be fully functional and capable of fertilizing the egg, and we know this...
This is why ICSI is primarily performed in IVF patients for this same fear
