Question about HCG bloodtest!!! Plz DR Q or Ladies help!

July 17, 2008

OK back in Dec I went to the doctor b/c I was having very heavy bleeding and very bad cramps. The doc did a blood test to see if I was preggo. She called me back and said that it was a 4 and anything less then 5 means that Im not preggo and I was losing it. I know that u dont have HCG in ur system unless ur preggo but why would it have been so low. Would that have been considered a chemical? Just wondering.

depends on the sensitivity of the lab...if that lab picks up hCG at a value of 5mIU/ml or greater...then most likely nothing there and this was solely contaminant

If the sensitivity is set at 2mIU/mL, then this was a chemical

DR Q... what do u mean contaminant? Not sure about that? Dont know about the sensivitity of the test either.

sensitivity=at value can one confidently believe that the test is truly positive in this case

contaminant=something present that can give a false value

Now im really lost. So not sure if I was ever preggo or not. This really bums me out alot :(

Katie, just like how each HPT varies in sensitivity to the HCG, each lab may have a different setting when they test ur blood for HCG. Some labs can accurately measure HCG as low 2 mIU/ml and above where as some can measure only 5 mIU/ml and above. If ur lab can detect as low as 2, then u could be considered 'pregant' and had a chemical. But if urs measures only 5 and above, then it means it was a false and u were not actually pregnant.
