July 11, 2008
Hi Girls/Dr. Q-
I had about a quarter sized spot of blood on the day of my d&c and NONE since...what is going on? When should I expect to bleed?
I am going out of the country tomorrow and I am a bit concerned. Thanks!

When I had my d&c I only bled the first day, then nothing. A few days later I got really really bad cramps, so bad I ended up in the ER overnight..they had to do another procedure because my cervix closed prematurely and didn't allow the blood to flow out. I hope this isn't the case with you and you have a wonderful trip :)
Hi babyquestions when i had my d&c in dec i only had the tiniest little bleed if you could even call it that the night i got it done, and i didnt bleed until two weeks later when i got what i thought was my period because it only lasted the same amount of time as my period nomally does and then i was back to normal the following month...
i had bloodtests done last week and i am waiting for the results they take 4 weeks so hopefully i will get some answers then because everytime i get pregnant and it ends in a miscarriage another part of my heart breaks and i dont think i am strong enough to keep putting myself through all the heartache...
i see, i was gonna do the D&C so i didnt have to see all the blood and be reminded each time that i lost another baby but i guess i would have been wrong on that!
I really only bled and cramped for about 12-14 hours and i was taking pain pills so i got thru it well enough. Im still bleeding but its very light and im sure it will be done in a day or 2.
Take care baby - im so sorry you are feeling this way - esp when you are going on a va-ca! :(

I didn't actually spot until 1 week later. I am still very lightly spotting - almost a mittleschmertz (sp?) type of bleeding. When I asked my OB/GYN he said that no one could really tell what is going to happen exactly. Of course, I had a 2nd trimester loss, and those aren't as common, so there seems to be a lot less good information about recovery time. Most of what I have found have been for those losses between 6 and 12 weeks - mostly under 8 weeks.
I will say that my emotions have been all over the place and you need to give yourself permission to "not be ok." That's hard in our society. There is an improper mentality of "just get over it," when you really need to take the time to grieve and recover - and the time frame for that is different for every single person.
Like you, I did the D&C because my understanding was that many women have to do one anyway after a "natural" miscarriage. And because of the timing of the pregnancy loss, I had two options: hospital stay with dilation and natural expulsion or D&C. My brain was not in any way in favor of a prolonged stay in the hospital on twilight drugs. If it had been discovered only 4 weeks later in my state, I would not have had the option and would have made arrangements to visit Canada.
I hope you feel better soon.
