Question about Clomid ad Femara

July 17, 2008

We have been TTC for 11 months and starting a few months ago my cycles went from perfectly regular to lasting over 40 days. I am not on CD26 with no ovulation yet. My doc has agreed to put me on Clomid...we are going to take a TTC break for a few months and then start it in Dec. My quesiton is I have read a lot about Clomid thinning the lining of the uterus.

What about Femara? How is that different from Clomid? Does it thin the lining?...what do patients have more success with, Clomid or Femara?

i just asked this same ? on one of caryns posts! LOL!

Im wondering the same thing about the clomid and the lining. I think that femera is a bit stronger than clomid but still not as strong as the injections.

I have also read that clomid messes with the CM.

Ok,, here is what I found Clomid VS Femera

What Does the Research Say About Clomid vs. Femara?

Several small studies have looked at Clomid vs. Femara for the treatment of infertility. Some of these studies showed that Femara is more effective than Clomid, while other studies showed that they are equally effective. A few studies have suggested that Femara may be effective in cases in which women have not ovulated while taking Clomid (these women are said to be "Clomid-resistant" or "clomiphene-resistant").

There is some thought that Femara may be less likely to cause negative effects on cervical mucus and the thickness of the uterine lining, compared to Clomid. Although Clomid is usually effective at causing ovulation, it can also cause problems with cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus (which may explain why some women ovulate on Clomid but do not become pregnant).

Many healthcare providers are more comfortable prescribing Clomid for infertility, as it has been thoroughly studied and has been used for decades. In addition, Clomid is available in generic form and is relatively inexpensive when compared to Femara. However, Femara appears to be a promising infertility treatment, and may be an option in women for whom Clomid has not been successful.

Hmm, good info Caryn. I have not started meds with monitoring yet, but did take clomid w/out monitoring w/no luck & now a cyst.

Does femera produce cyst as well? Also, do they checl your lining while rx the meds or only when you are doing IUI or IVF?

I have always been monitored, this is the first time we have done IUI... also the first time I was told my lining was thin...

I was on 6 cycles of clomid and switched to femara because the clomid was thinning my lining. I got pregnant the first cycle on femara (chemical) and then just found out I'm pregnant on my second cycle of femara. I'm also on estrace to increase the lining thickness and progesterone. Good luck.

Hi LauraM,

I am now on my 3rd cycle with Femara and hopefully it works with this round! I have not tried Clomid because I have PCOS and Femara is supposed to be better for women who have that syndrome also I have read about Clomid vs. Femara and its risks and i have come up with both of them carrying their risks but only when taken when you ARE actually pregnant. Good Luck to you!!
