Question about bloating--when is it dangerous?

August 04, 2007

When i began taking follistim, my doc said to call right away if i either had pain, couldn't button my pants, or gained five pounds. I guess these are signs that the ovaries are over stimulated? Well, during treatment, everything went fine and they only confirmed that two eggs were mature. Would the over stimulation only occur with MANY eggs trying to mature? I ask because today i noticed that my stomach is pretty noticibly bloated. But i'm not in pain at all and don't seem to have gained any weight. Can i be assured that this isn't that dangerous overstimulation--especially if the doc only saw two mature eggs? I'm around five days past ovulation. Oh, and this week I also found out that i have a bladder infection, so maybe the bloating is just from all the extra water i've been drinking. Thanks for your advice.

Ovarian HyperStimulation (OHSS) is one of the most serious medical conditions we encounter in our field, and all of us don't take it lightly. This usually happens to younger women, and especially those with PCOS who are taking injectable gonadotropins. What are some of the signs and symptoms?

1. Severe bloating that will make you gain much water weight. If terribly bad, we may have to drain it out of your tummy.

2. Painful Ovaries that with excess activity can twist and become an emergency

3. Development of dangerous Blood Clots

4. Severe Nausea/Vomiting that you can't even drink water at times, creating bad dehydration

5. Insomnia and just a "misreable" state

We usually see this more when people undergo IVF and we get more than 20-30 eggs, rarely see it with fewer eggs and we attribute the culprit creating this syndrome primarily to the hCG shot. Incidentally, OHSS will get worse if you wind up getting pregnant after the stimulation. This sometimes prompts us during an IVF cycle to not transfer any embryos and do a "freeze-all" so that we don't put the patient's life at risk by getting her pregnant.

So I guess in your case with two eggs, chances are that if anything, you're having a very mild case of OHSS with two eggs and would just try and stay hydrated with gatorade type of products, eat, don't do excessive activity and you should be ok.

wow that sounds incredibly scary. I guess i'm probably ok though. I am not in pain or anything, besides some regular dull back pain prob from ovulation. So basically i'd definitley KNOW it if this is happening to me? I guess odds are it's not if i'm not exactly sure. I did have an HCG shot last weekend. I sure hope that I'm pregnant though. Can you tell me any pregnancy signs that someone taking follistim might notice? I suppose everyone is different regardless of what they took, but i was just curious. My boobs have been sore practically the whole cycle, so i don't think i can use that as a sign.

Pregnancy signs are really not much different, except that you may feel your ovaries a little more tender than normal if you made more than one follicle and your boobs and everything else progesterone affects (review site for all symptoms talked about from progesterone) may be a little more than normal from having extra follicles that were created
