Question about Antihistamines and vitamin C and Cervical Secretions

September 05, 2007

Hi Dr. Q! Is it true that Antihistamines and vitamin C supplements can dry out the cervical secretions that escort sperm to your egg and these items should be avoided.

For those of us who are allergy sufferes (aaachoo!), there is some evidence that antihistamines (which notoriously can "dry" out many of your secretions) can have a small, minor effect (Sudafed having a worse effect). What can be considered would be to use Robitussin to try and counteract these effects if you have bad allergies during season . Try this first, but if a signficant drop has been noticed (not likely), then consideration can be given to stop the antihistamines 4 days prior to when the ewcm is expected (2-3days prior to ovulation) and restart after ovulation. Vitamin C should have no effect on cervical mucus.
