Psychiatric drugs & conceiving

August 20, 2008

I'm 32 & have been married & on the pill for 10 years. I got off the pill about 7 months ago. I have a regular cycle of 25 days. Never had any "female" problems. My husband & I are very healthy - don't drink/smoke.

I am also Bipolar. I take Lithium, Seroquel & Welbutrin. I feel that my disorder is finally under control. I have been "trying" to get pregnant for 4-5 months. Could my meds interfere with me getting pregnant? (I do understand that I need to consult my doctor about taking meds while pregnant.)

Is there anything else you could suggest that might help me conceive faster? We put a family on hold for career purposes & now feel crunched for time.

Your meds shouldn't interfere with getting pregnant...

However, taking combination medications like this during pregnancy may not be adviseable...Talk to your doc about possibly just being on Lamictal as this is pretty safe and see if you can be controlled solely on this medication prior to getting pregnant for Bipolar Disorder...

You're very young still (yep!) and would start with this type of control for a safer and healthier pregnancy (along with baby)

Another request for Dr. Q...please

1) I stopped smoking awhile back but still chew Nicoret here & there. Is this dangerous for fertility &/or pregnancy?

2) Is there any reason (or, in the alternative, harm) to take Fertility Blend on top of prenatal viatamins?
