Prolactin question for one of the docs...
August 25, 2008
I've known I've had elevated prolactin levels for 3 years now (misdiagnosed as PCOS about 5 years ago. Anywho.
Before conceiving my daughter, I was on bromocriptine and levels were well managed and regular menses returned (prior to this, I had 3-4 periods/year). I breastfed my daughter for 7 1/2 months... had and oversupply and therefore had enough milk stored thru 14 months.
After BF, bromocriptine dose tripled from before Mia and still no return of menses and horrible side effects set in. I was switched to cabergoline (dose landed at 2 pills, twice per week), which brought results... levels regularly under 8 and menses returned, and ovulation was detectable thru OPK's. But not pregnancy. I thought that since we conceived within 3 cycles after being put on bromo.
Here's my question: Why do I still leak? I have milk in both breasts and haven't pumped/BF in at least 17 months and do not do any nipple stimulation. Prolactin level is normal, periods are regular. It's definitely milk, not colostrum. I do have large breasts (G cup), if that makes any difference.
Your thoughts please? Should I be pursuing this issue further with my pitutary endo? I'm doing fertility treatment with my OB/GYN since RE appointments are nearly 2 months out at this point.
