Progesterone injections

August 11, 2008

I'm going to have IM Progesterone oil injections around transfer time. Are they really super painful? I'm getting nervous just thinking about it. Help!!

August 11, 2008

KarenB- I am told that its best to warm the oil in betweeen your hands so that it goes in better

I have never used them, but a few girls on this site have and I am sure have some good tips!

When is your transfer and retrieval ?

August 11, 2008

KarenB - I have been taking progesterone shots for the last 2+ weeks! The shots don't really hurt when you do it. But the next day, you'll be sore at the injection site and ya might have a knot there too! =(

The oil is a bit difficult to actually inject but I've been giving them to myself so it's not all that hard.

Good luck and let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

I'm starting my Lupron on the 21st and have to wait for my Lupron bleed before I start my Gonal-F. If I map it out correctly, my retrieval should take place somewhere around September 18-20 and the transfer anywhere from 3-5 days after that. Caryn, I noticed you are starting your Lupron on about the 18th. Are you doing the long protocol, starting Lupron on day 21 of your cycle until you bleed, or are you doing the short protocol, which starts on day 2 of your cycle?

Barbara, Thanks so much for the input. It's really not that bad giving them to yourself? My nurse said that I could give the shots myself, also. Do you have to pull back on the syringe after inserting the needle but before injecting to make sure there is no blood? My instruction video said to do this first and that if blood is present, to take the needle out, use a new one and pick a new injection (I was told this is to avoid injecting the medication into a vein instead of the muscle).

How did you inject the med yourself? It's supposed to be put in around your backside, right?

Thanks again!!

Hey Karen B- I am starting on 8/18 Lupron,, then going in for my baseline on 8/28... the RE said I probably will start my Follitism then,, and be monitored every few days to see when retrieval will be.. tentatively its set for 9/9

I have never done this, so not sure if this is a "long" or "short" protocol.. I was told I would get AF on the Lupron probably around the sme time I normally would.. which would be 8/24

Did you do BC Pills? I did not have to

Looks like we will be around the same time...

Good Luck, keep me posted :)

I don't actually pull the plunger up before doing the injection. I figure, the chances of me hitting a vein in the fattiest part of my body is slim to none! =)

I lean against the countertop in my bathroom to stabilize myself so I can turn my upper body. I ususally try to get the shot closest to the upper part of my bum, but quite frequently get my hips. Just make sure that when you stick yourself, you have your fingers under the little plastic edges of the syringe so that you can push the plunger easily.

Best of luck!

Thanks so much Barbara, I hope you don't mind if I ask you more questions as the time gets closer.

Caryn,

I also don't have to take B/C pills either. I did ask the dr. though what would happen if by some miracle, I became pregnant on my own just before starting the Lupron. He said to go ahead and try. He said that they usually don't like it but that it happens and that people can and have found out that they are pregnant while on Lupron.

This next question is off topic, so I want to ask you both as well as posting it for others.

When my husband and I have intercourse, it seems like most of his semen comes right out after within about a minute or so and no matter what I do (pillow under hips, etc.), it stills comes out. Is this normal?

August 13, 2008

Hi KarenB- My RE told me the same thing about if by chance a miracle happens and I got pregnant before the IVF.. so we were not trying- but if it did happen she said its nothing to worry about.. I would be getting a blood test and U/S before the follitism anyhow.. to check for pregnancy before starting the Follitism meds... I start the Lupron on 8/18 and AF is due 8/24 - I wonder what would happen if one was preggo and started the lupron and did not know it.. did your doctor say?

As far as semen leaking out, I am told only the best swimmers get in there first.. and that its normal to have some leak out... I make my DH pull my legs over my head and rest them against the wall or head board... but yes mine DH's Semen does leak out too- this should not hinder natural conception..

Caryn,

The doctor said I could try this month and that even if I started taking the Lupron , it's OK. I guess theoretically the Lupron would suppress the Progesterone, therefore not maintaining the pregnancy, but he said it happens and that people have found out they were pregnant, even while on Lupron. Baby dust to both of us.

August 13, 2008

KarenB- so if the Lupron suppress progesterone theoretically the pregnacy would or could end in M/C ??

If I were, but doubt I am , I would be 5 days into the Lupron..

August 13, 2008

I guess that could happen theoretically but we would never know because either body would absorb it and AF would come as usual but he said it does happen. Wouldn't that be awesome if that happened to both us this month. It would be a good problem to have.

August 13, 2008

KarenB- I assume if we you or I did get pregnant, it might not be too awesome since if the fetus gets absorbed we would not know.. unless the fetus survived

August 13, 2008

I know and that would be my luck because this month, my CM has been incredibly good for baby making. It's in God's hands though. He's at the wheel and he won't steer us down the wrong path. It's gonna work out for both us. I have a great feeling out that!!!

You can ABSOLUTELY ask me questions! In my opinion, I've had a relatively easy journey with IVF so, I hope yours is just as easy! =)
