December 19, 2007
If any of yall are like me and were going to like CVS or somewhere to get Clomid and whatever else, well I just saw a commerical on TV about Walmarts Prescriptions being cheaper, so I just called, and guess what I was paying 21 at CVS and now im going to be paying 9 dollars at WalMart for Clomid 50mgs for 5 tablets, so if its 100mgs of course its 18 bucks.
Im in shock still, but soo happy I called, because thats where im going from now on.
Just thought I would let you ladies know, gotta save money where we can you know!
Lots of love!!

Im taking the generic too but from CVS, I made that clear one day, saying hey this is generic right and they said yes.
Maybe it isnt. Whats the Generic name to Clomid?
I just think it was awesome that I was paying 21 and now im paying 9 woohoo. I asked about the Prometrium and the said 60 and im paying 25 at CVS, but apparently my insurance is helping with Prometrium because the pharmacist at Walmart said 60 before the insurance, and I know if Walmart is 60 then CVS would be more for sure.
Hmm Chels I might try that, but I think if you tell the pharmacist generic they will do generic.

I too recently found this out about Walmart and I'm very upset. I'm from Michigan and here and a few surrounding states we have a store called Meijer. Its basically Walmart but a bit more expensive, they were around way before Walmart was (I also used to work there) so I'm a big Meijer shopper. We do go to Walmart a lot more now but before we were strictly Meijer shoppers. Well my prescription for 100mg of Clomid which is actually 10 pills of the 50mg's was $54.00!!!!
My next prescription is getting filled at Walmart, provided I need more than one round :D!

Oh my goodness 54 bucks I would have paid 21+21= 42 from CVS but since I got my 50mgs from CVS the other day with my prometrium it was 21, and now my doctor agreed to up my dose for the cycle that is coming up, and so since I got my first 50mgs from CVS and paid 21 im getting my second from Walmart and paying 9...woohoo atleast im saving 12 bucks.
I just cant get over the difference in price. ITs amazing, and DEF if I were you totally switch to Walmart. Just think you will only pay 18 and be saving like 35 bucks. WOW. Its amazing!
Lots of love sweetie and just call and check with them but im sure its the same, although it may be generic but I just found out I have been on generic this whole time, so its not going to bother me.

Garcia im confused???
I know my insurance will not cover Clomid, since I dont have infertility insurance but mainly all of the US is like that...I hate it, but I can see why it gets soo expensive.
My insurance though does cover Progesterone Meds for whatever reason. I guess they dont know its also to induce AFs...haha im sure they do but there is no way that they can pinpoint thats what im using it for. Who knows

Just so you know girls, if a generic is manufactuered for a specific drug (such as Clomid), most states require that the pharmacy dispense the generic to you (to save you money)...the brand and generic are A-B rated, and this means chemically they are equivalant. (fillers and such may differ, but active ingrediants MUST be EXACTLY the same!) If you do require the brand name for some reason you can count on paying A TON for it, and your doctor will probably have to specifiy on the presciption "brand name only" or "no substitutes"
Just a little lesson from the Pharmacy tech of the group1 :)

Garcia, I'm confused about what you said.......so If I don't have insurance even at Walmart I will still have to pay full price?
I know my brand is generic, as I had my doc look at the actual prescription when I went to my follow up. If its still going to cost me full price thats going to suck. Maybe I don't get what you meant by that???

Here's some information I wish to pass along that you can all refer to and let others know what I understand of how this works(think for the most part is correct but must admit, don't own a pharmaceutical company nor have stock so there's probably a little more to the story)
There is a standard error allowed to pharmaceutical companies when producing a drug...so that if they say something is 100mg, they are allowed to deviate 10% from this stated dose (100mg) if it's a brand name...
Generic producers are allowed to deviate 20% from what the Brand name (100mg) states (but remember they have an allowable error)...
So, the following is a possibility...if a pharmaceutical is really good, they can make that 100mg drug into 90mg consistently and be ok (10%)... A generic pharmaceutical if really good and confident in their production, can then make their drug 20% of the now 90mg the Brand drugs makes (but on their label state 100mg-totally allowed)...
If you do the math, that allows the Generic company to now make that stated 100mg drug into 72mg of the active ingredient (20% of 90mg) and is totally allowed. Have to remember that the initial studies used to evaluate the drugs efficacy most likely had the 100mg stated...
Now, I'm not bagging Generics, I personally use them myself for many OTC drugs such as ibuprofen, antihistamines etc, because with most medications there is still more than enough active ingridient to get the job done...However, in meds that we're pushing the limits with in terms of how little drug can we use to make it as safe as possible (like 20mcg birth control pills) taking generics may not be such a great idea as there may not be enough birth control ingridients (Estrogen/Progesterone) to keep one from getting pregnant...
Believe Generics can also have different delivery systems of the drug so long as it's comparable...
Hope I clarified some of the Generic talk because it's always a topic people like to talk about...
And btw, different pharmacies do charge different prices for the same prescription drugs without letting anyone know what these prices are...
Most don't announce their prescription medication prices (it's not to their advantage to advertise) because most patients don't think about it and simply show up to any pharmacy with a prescription. No easy way at this present moment to compare medication prices between pharmacies...
But once the word gets out (holy toledo...the internet will eventually do this by having people like you guys talk about it as above) these practices will have to change and fair market pricing may eventually take over the pricing of medications!!!

that was soooo great to know - thx Dr. Q!!! Jolene - since you dont have infertility insurnace couldnt the doc bill your insurance for the CLomid as something youi need to have? If you have PCOS then you could only ovulate once or twice a year and that cant be healthy so if they said that Clomid was a pill to help "regulate" you just like the birth control would be? Im sure they would if they could but its worht asking about. I have been going thru many, many many tests and fertility treatments and found out that the RE somehow bills cool and i only have used $2.00 of my $30,000 lifetime max. I have had several tests, DH has had tests, i had an HSG and 2 IUI's.... countless ultrasounds and still nothing has been billed as "infertility treatments". Needless to say i was very, very happy to see that cuz i would have guessed we were using that $30,000 limit up very quickly! Thats good cuz the IVF we will go with next month costs appr $12,050 at my docs office! Yikes!
I work in an independent pharmacy in a small town. People think since we are a small pharmacy we will charge more than say walmart and walgreens. In the last month we have probably had like at least 5 customers transfer there rx's due to our price being better. so what im saying is dont totally write off your small local pharmacy because they might just suprise you on their pricing! And ALWAYS SHOP AROUND FOR PRICING!!! And if you find a better price somewhere and you really like your current pharmacy ask if they will price match. Most will if its reasonable! Good luck ladies!
Wow thanks everyone lots of great information and thanks Dr. Q.
So its still safe and good to take the generic brand of Clomid right? I got a little confused in the doctor talk for a second...haha. I think I got it though.
Im just still in shock that the price was that much different but again yeah we just dont think about it being different from one to the other, I honestly thought mainly everyone was set at a certain price.
Amazing.
Ashlee - Im doing great. Didnt ovulate on round 3 of Clomid but thats ok. Then the doctor told me that they were only going to keep me on 50mgs. So of course I had to get on prometrium to induce my period and picked up the 50mgs, and just kept thinking why didnt they up the dose. Soo I finally called and had my doctor call me back, and we talked and he said the only reason he did it was because of how well I did on rounds 1 & 2, but he agrees that maybe I am getting immuned to it, like I thought, because I totally had ovulation pain for a week or more, and for whatever reason it didnt happen.
So anyways he upped the dose and im sooo much happier and really think that this coming cycle could be the one. We will see.
How are you doing sweetie????
